Spain ‘regrets pain and injustice’ caused by colonisation of Mexico

Spain’s foreign minister has expressed “regret” over the “pain and suffering” caused by its colonisation of Mexico.

Jose Manuel Albares made the comments on Friday at the opening of the exhibition of Indigenous Mexican art in Madrid, just days after Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, renewed calls for a Spanish apology.

Mr Albares said relations between Spain and Mexico were “a very human story, and like every human story, full of light and shadow.

“There has also been pain – pain and injustice toward Indigenous peoples, to whom this exhibition is dedicated,” he added.

“There was injustice – it is only fair to recognise it today, and fair to regret it. Because that is also part of our shared history, and we cannot deny or forget it.”

The comments mark one of the clearest acknowledgements by a top Spanish official of the suffering endured by Indigenous communities in the Americas during the colonial era.

For years, the issue was a source of diplomatic tension between the two countries.

I guess Cortes should have let the Aztecs alone to continue to butcher and sacrifice their neighbors. Is Mexico better off today?

Apologizing for something that happened 500 years ago is beyond absurd.

Right, we should have allowed the Aztecs to continue to rip the hearts out of their neighbors by the thousands.

That's a good question in light of the narco state Meheco has become.

Maybe the USA needs to go down and teach them what Democracy is all about. Root out the Cartels and gangsters and make it the country Juarez wanted it to be.

Spain should make up for all of it by constructing tall pyramids, and digging still-beating hearts out of the descendants whose ancestors brutally invaded Mexico. Every month, all of the evil descendants will be forced to place their name in the heart-stopping lottery.

Patterned after the Hunger Games, all of the descendents will be forced into arenas, and forced to watch. Any descendents found avoiding the festivities will move to the front of the line.

Any descendant who denies their heritage will be sent to re-education camps, to get their mind right.

Cortez was a butcher.

It’s good Spain did that. Should we apologize for what we did to the Indians and the Trail of Tears? Kinda late. It isn’t too late for Hawaii. They were a happy people until Capt. Cook admitted they would have been better without his visit.

We did it to Japanese Americans to the tune of $20k. That much money should be awarded to all black Americans born before the Civil Rights Act of ‘64. That way we can call it even regarding slavery.

Dumb ol’ Spain should concentrate on more important things. Like getting Rome to apologize for invading the peninsula in 206 BC.

Oh, and the Moors. Get them to apologize, too.

By the way, George was wrong.

After some 800 years fighting the muslims and finally in 1492 driving them out of Spain, the Spanish found themselves a New World. Some twenty-five years later they discovered the Aztecs. The Aztecs were, as you say sacrificing and butchering their neighbors by the thousands.

Does anyone, except perhaps Mexican anthropologists, think they just threw all of that butchered meat away? Of course not. The Aztecs were cannibals—perhaps the most enthusiastic cannibals in human history. Their priests wore the skins of their victims until they rotted off. Their hair was matted from the unwashed from years of blood. Is there any wonder that the Spanish looking at all of this, knew they were dealing with a Satanic culture?

Mexico should be on its knees thanking the Spanish. Even if one is a critic of Catholicism, to apologize for replacing Aztec butchery with the Catholic Mass is absurd.

There is some thought that we should have just annexed Mexico after the war in 1848. In retrospect it would have probably have saved us a lot of troubles.

They were constantly at war with one another, and completely at the whim of their rulers.

Guess I missed the memo about today being Apologies Day with both Spain & the Canadian Forces groveling over long-ago misdeeds. Perhaps I should apologize to my kindergarten teacher for that inappropriate finger painting I did on a desk.

See, this is why Spain is third-rate country in 2025. This government minister’s comments are indicative of a mentality that has zero pride in his country’s history and zero belief that the Spanish culture, religion or even language are any good (none of which the Mexica would have but for Cortes et al.).
