Thune last week dismissed the possibility of nuking the filibuster as a “bad idea," but on Thursday night President Donald Trump urged the Senate to use the tactic.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune's office on Friday indicated that the leader's position has not changed on whether to use the nuclear option to bypass the filibuster and end the government shutdown, despite pressure from the White House.
Thune last week dismissed the possibility of nuking the filibuster as a “bad idea," but on Thursday night President Donald Trump urged the Senate to use the tactic, which would circumvent Democratic opposition to a bill that would restore funding through Nov. 21. The proposition comes as the government shutdown enters its 31st day.
“Leader Thune’s position on the importance of the legislative filibuster is unchanged,” a spokesman for Thune told NewsNation.
Several other Republican senators have also opposed eliminating the filibuster, which requires legislation to have 60 votes to pass, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson, who cautioned it would set a bad precedent if Republicans used the maneuver now.
“The filibuster has traditionally been viewed as a very important safeguard. If the shoe was on the other foot, I don’t think our team would like it,” Johnson said.
The Senate is now out for the weekend and will not return to vote on the funding bill until Monday.

Lock n load baby. Protect yourself and ur loved ones.
Change the rule narrowly.
That the filibuster can be suspended in the circumstance of the government is unfunded 45 days then, for the limited purpose of passing a budget, the filibuster can be suspended for the limited purpose of passing a budget.
And then pass a budget that cuts everything the Democrats hold dear as a reward for their actions.
Good! This cuts both ways
The minute the democrats take back the Senate the filibuster will be gone.
Harry Reid and the Democrats NUKED it for Supreme Court Justices.....so why can’t the Republicans just do it for THIS? VERY NARROW.
Ironic, Thune is defending an arcane institution that is being used to thwart the will of the people that gave Republicans the majority, when that same institution will immediately be terminated if the Democrats ever regain power.
The filibuster is already reduced from its former 67 Vote threshold.
I wonder what kind of candy the president and 1st lady gave as treats.
I would go with “100 Grand” or “5th Avenue”
Yes. It would be a short term victory creating long term concerns.
Agree that it would be only a short term victory and the long term concerns weigh heavily against it. The Dems are desperate, I believe they are hoping riots like in 2020 will push the Repubicans into submission and concessions to their crazy demands. Without self correcting from their far-left tilt, they are irreversibly heading to losing national power, though maintaining city and some state controls. God help us if they ever regain the Senate majority with the far leftist power group in control.
Thanks, Thune.
Do not do it.
The dems have been waging asymmetric political war against the pubbies forever. I can’t help but think dems will quickly throw out filibuster if they gain power. I think Thune would be seen as a hero. Pubs are going to look feckless if they end up caving.
Exactly. One hopes that the oxygen thief will do something right for a change, rather than enabling Demoncrats.
