SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The 22-year-old Utah man charged with killing Charlie Kirk can appear in court wearing street clothes but must be physically restrained due to security concerns, a judge ruled Monday.
Attorneys for Tyler Robinson argued images of him shackled and in jail clothing would spread widely in a case with extensive press coverage and public interest, which they said could prejudice future jurors.
Judge Tony Graf agreed to make some allowances to protect Robinson’s presumption of innocence before a trial, agreeing that the case has drawn “extraordinary” public and media attention.
“Mr. Robinson shall be dressed as one who is presumed innocent,” Graf said during a virtual court hearing.
Utah prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder in the the Sept. 10 shooting of the conservative activist on a Utah college campus and plan to seek the death penalty.
While Robinson has no prior criminal history, Graf said the charges he faces are extremely serious and present safety concerns in the courtroom. It’s the court’s highest priority to protect the attorneys, court staff and Robinson himself during what could be emotional hearings, Graf said before denying Robinson’s request to appear without restraints. He did, however, prohibit members of the media from photographing or filming Robinson’s restraints.
Robinson is accused of firing a fatal gunshot at Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump who worked to steer young voters toward conservatism, from a rooftop overlooking a crowded courtyard at Utah Valley University in Orem. He was arrested the following night when he showed up with his parents at his hometown sheriff’s office in southwest Utah, more than a three-hour drive from the site of the...

Sounds like the judge thinks the trial is nobody else' business.
He should wear a furry costume.
When is the Pay-Per-View of his execution by firing squad? Count me in !!!
C'mon, Utah.. "Speedy Trial", remember?
What about Tyler?
Only the judge can wear a furry costume in court.
It’s THAT serious!
My big problem is that this punk's next court appearance is not until the middle of January.
WTF? Drag it out for years on end …
A Vigorous defense is necessary for us to avoid a police state. I have no problem with it. Jurors are very influenced by defendants in prison garb.
Let a fair trial commence and then afaic death penalty he shot an unarmed man in the back.
I do not have an issue with Tyler being dressed in regular clothes, as opposed to a prison jumpsuit. One more grounds for appeal denied.
The restraints are in keeping with the nature of the case, so I also have no issues there. No photos/videos is a bit more problematic from a 1st amendment view.
I want to see how far this judge will go to railroad Robinson’s defense attorneys. I want to see who the real culprits were behind this assassination.
Won’t matter. The evidence will speak for itself. Hopefully they have enough of it.
Build the gallows.
Agreed. The case against him is strong enough no matter how he dresses for trial, and I would rather see the judge go overboard to foreclose any chances tor appeal.
Sarah Boone got the same treatment and was given life. The only way this goes wrong is if there’s some leftists and/or trannies in the jury that’ll refuse to convict.
I really want the public execution part with it though, which probably won’t happen but a regular execution will work too as long as it’s more like a Mcveigh style quick one.
What’s that smell coming from Utah ?
Smells like collusion.
I think there may be layers to this assassination.
This was all standard stuff for a high profile case.
I have no idea why there are even articles being written about this. It’s entirely common for a defendant to wear regular clothes during a trial. I had a jury trial last week and my client (who is detained) was allowed to change into a suit for the trial. I request this for every criminal trial. This is just gaslighting to stir people up and completely unnecessary, IMO.
DISGUSTING POS JUDGE!
And so it starts. This will be like the OJ trial 2.0.
I stand corrected.
Thank you for your post.
If I were the judgee, I would have allowed him only to wear a full body codom. Damn cry baby.
