The White House is warning 42 million low-income Americans will start to miss SNAP benefits Saturday if Democrats don’t vote for the funding stopgap this week.
Speaker Mike Johnson is siding with the Trump administration’s decision not to tap emergency funds to avert a lapse in food aid for 42 million Americans.
“I got a summary of the whole legal analysis, and it certainly looks legitimate to me,” Johnson said during a news conference Monday.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is due to run out of money Nov. 1 amid the government shutdown. President Donald Trump suggested Friday night he may shift around funding to avoid such a potentially catastrophic outcome.
But the administration also warned lawmakers in a memo Friday it could not and would not seek access to a range of emergency funds, putting millions of low-income families on track to lose food aid as the partisan government funding standoff continues.
Johnson said Monday a SNAP contingency fund, which currently contains $5 billion, is “not legally available to cover the benefits right now” because they represent “a finite source of funds.” Democrats, and privately some Republicans, have argued the administration always has the legal authority to tap those funds in an emergency.
He added that if the administration were to “transfer funds from these other sources, it pulls it away immediately from school meals and infant formula.”
SNAP food aid benefits have never lapsed in modern history, including during shutdowns. And the fallout would devastate both red and blue states, including vast swaths of rural America and Trump voters, along with the House GOP’s Hispanic-majority districts.
Some Senate Republicans are pushing for passage of a standalone SNAP funding bill if needed this week, including Appropriations Chair Susan Collins of Maine, but it’s unclear if GOP...

Not to fret, Sally Ann always throws a good spread for Thanksgiving!
1 out of 8 Americans is on food stamps????
And, for you grammar nazis out there, "is" IS indeed the correct verb usage.
‘Dere gonna’ be a lot a’ lootin’ in ‘da streets bery soon.
Dems figured out a long time ago in order to control the population, just give them freebies and they will own them for life

True. BTW, the following also would have been correct:
- 1 out of every 8 Americans ARE on food stamps.
- 1/8th of all Americans ARE on food stamps.
Fasting is incredibly good for you.
“1/8th of all Americans ARE on food stamps.”
I’m pretty sure most all are Democrats.
Y’all got to wonder why we tolerate
this theft of our hard work.
Hunger is a great motivator
them thar baby mamas on line bragging how they will steal food from Walmart, "I be fillin' a cart and just walkin' out". Dey isn't gonna be stopped no hows, no ways. They has 9 kids ta feed, dontcha know.
They might have to forgo getting their nails done or cancel a hair appt. I know, I know the new Caddy needs gas too.
The main Dem being LBJ.
An' dey gotta' has 'dat "frizz free" gel ta' tame 'dos nappy haids.
And, as others have pointed out, if the food covered by food stamps was restricted to the basics (i.e. fruits, vegetables, rice, inexpensive meats, etc.) the cost of the whole program could be drastically reduced. It would also provide greater incentive for recipients to get off their a*ses and find a job, find a better paying job, or work a few more hours a week.
Another effective way to reduce dependence on food stamps is to have EBT cards only redeemable at government food banks, where just the basics are offered (i.e. no junk food or expensive luxury items). The left have made every effort to “reduce the stigma” of receiving food assistance. That’s part of the problem. EBT cards make it too easy to be on the dole without being noticed.
There’s no shame in genuinely needing food assistance and there are private food banks that offer it. But making it too easy has caused a certain type of person to take it for granted and believe they’re entitled to it rather than being grateful for the helping hand that it is.
Your second example is correct, but the first is not.
For “1 of 8”
The subject “1” is singular and, therefore, takes “is,” the singular form of the verb,
Very good points
“‘Dere gonna’ be a lot a’ lootin’ in ‘da streets bery soon.”
After the low level of violence at No Kings, I think the D’s are counting on SNAP beneficiaries to engage in, say, more vigorous protests. Color revolutions aren’t as easy in the United States as they are in eastern Europe.
For “1 of 8”
The subject “1” is singular and, therefore, takes “is,”
Except when you say “one out of EVERY eight Americans”, you’re talking about a plural, as I see it. The number of separate groups of 8 Americans is approximately 40 million (340 mil/8). Selecting 1 person from each group of 8 is 40 million Americans.
On the other hand, you could be right. I can think of similar statements where IS sounds more correct. e.g. “One member of each family is allowed to bring a guest”.
::..when you say “one out of EVERY eight Americans”, you’re talking about a plural...::
::::
Sorry, incorrect. “One” is singular.
Think of it this way.
You come into the room with 4 cookies, and you kindly give me one of them after I beg for it. One of your 4 cookies is now in my hand.
The subject is “one,” which is singular in number and, therefore, requires a singular verb. The phrase “of your 4 cookies” is merely modifying “one.”
