A high-ranking Kremlin official has hinted at a potential breakthrough in ending the war in Ukraine. Kirill Dmitriev, a senior Kremlin official, expressed optimism that Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are "quite close" to reaching an agreement to end the ongoing conflict, now in its fifth year.

But, other than reading online, you never hear the talking heads discuss what Russian callas the “root causes” of the war.
The talking heads will not tell you that the only peace possible is when Russia has fully restored its USSR borders and a bit of added territory as a buffer.
So articles like this are just fodder to patronize ill informed westerners.
Dmetriev is not a senior diplomatic guy. He’s an econ guy. If there were any discussions going on, it would be Lavrov’s team — if there were any discussion going on.

“I’m going to have to know that we’re going to make a deal. I’m not going to be wasting my time,” Trump told reporters aboard air force one as he travelled to Asia.

When Russia talked about the root causes the other side dismissed them. So, they eventually got the war they worked long and hard to get. Now it’s a Tar Baby, everybody wants out but the NATO war merchants and their Puppet Z want it to keep going.
Ukrainians are continuing to die so foreigners can sell weapons, etc. and pretend they are “saving” something. Ukraine has lost over 10 million people, 24% of its population (the equivalent of the USA losing 82 million people). It’s lost a generation of young men, so a baby boom isn’t going to happen. It’s lost 20+% of its land so far, much of it valuable land.
Ukraine needs a deal now. Russia has achieved some buffer space and a smaller Ukrainian army while Russia’s has grown larger. Ukraine has achieved recognition for bravery and/or foolhardiness, depending on observers’ goals, which are selfish and have nothing to do with Ukraine, which is the patsy being used to attempt a takedown of Russia.
Maybe with a little more land wrangling an agreement can be reached. I hope so.

Vlads objectives have been the same from day one. Retaking the ethnic Russian Lughansk ( check) , and Donetsk ( at 80 percent liberated), and the two other ethnic Russian provinces. He has never expressed any interest in Western Ukraine, ......the age old Russian Donbas will remain Russian.

I suspect there will be some incremental steps (already happening) towards deescalation.
If you notice, from our side, the deep strikes into Russia have largely ended, so have the terror attacks, or attacks on Russias oil refining capacity...
Channels of communications are opened, formal negotiations evolve with both sides coming in with their wish list but knowing they need to get into a zone of reasonable compromise if they want this mess to end.
There’s some back and forth, and eventually a deal is made.
Most of the negotiations will be out of public sight for obvious reasons (pundits, media spin, opposition politics...).
Russia don’t want this mess. This is costing them.
Frankly, and I’m not anti-Ukraine, I think it’s the leadership in Ukraine that is probably the true obstacle to peace. Why?
If you’re in power in Ukraine, any peace deal will be ugly in the sense that that the lie is over. Ukraine lost.
They lost a long time ago. They failed to achieve their political objective of NATO membership and military objectives of holding onto the ethnic Russian areas everyone knew the Russians will go for.
In fact, the longer the war rages on, the more Ukraine will lose!
It will mean an end for those in power. It will mean many of them will look like failures.
This might sound nuts. But you have a dictator and military junta running Ukraine. There is no political process or mechanism to steer in another direction. I’m such a world you kick the can down the road and hope some miracle happens to change the course things are on.
The country serves the dictator and junta all the way down to the last Ukrainian.
