Maryland governor hints at special session to redraw congressional districts

Maryland Governor Wes Moore strongly hinted today that he is ready to call a special session of the General Assembly to redraw the state congressional districts. That move would flip Maryland’s lone Republican seat in Congress, currently held by Representative Andy Harris, to a Democrat.

At an appearance at a food pantry in Bowie today, 7News pushed the governor for an answer to redistricting. Yesterday, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) called for redistricting in a series of social media posts.

“I hate gerrymandering. I hate it as a concept. I hate that it happens. But also you know what I hate? Is that the country is gerrymandered right now?" said Moore. "It's just the truth, and so if these states are going to have conversations, well, do we have fair maps? And let’s be clear, these are states where Donald Trump says 'do you have fair maps?' Then I think the state of Maryland should have a conversation about, do we have fair maps as well?"

"We need to make sure that next November, when the people vote, that they are voting on fair maps and they are voting where we have a chance to make sure that the people are selecting our elected officials and elected officials are not selecting their people,” said Moore.

Mary. can gain but one more CD in the currently heavily Gerrymandered State.

Tax Moore can’t fix his State, but can slightly help out the Dollar Store 0bama.

They really don’t have that much left to gain. They already had rigged their states. They shot their ball, now it is our turn and they can’t keep up.

The rats are terrified the SC is going to toss the race based districts. I expect every rat state to try eliminate every R district in their states.

Yep, Trump has decided to push for “equity” in partisan State by State Gerrymandering.

The ‘Rats are WAY far ahead in same.

The ‘Rats have long not been fair.

And yet Jamie was back to work days later. I’m still a basket case since my son’s passing almost 2-1/2 yrs ago. I have no sympathy for that man because he has no heart.

It would be really ironic (not to mention amusing) if some of their redraws end up having the opposite effect, given some of the realigning of some demographics that has become more evident in the last couple of election cycles.

Trump got 34% of the vote in Maryland. Only 1 of 8 US Representatives for Maryland is a Republican 12.5% of Maryland’s delegation. They have already massively gerrymandered such that Republicans are represented by only about 1/3rd of their actual share of the vote in that state. The story is the same....ie Republican voters being massively under represented in California, Illinois Massachusetts, all of New England, etc.

Red States need to return the favor and gerrymander just as hard as they possibly can in favor of Republicans.

Electoral votes should really be counted by electoral district instead of the all-for-one state method.

Abolish mail-in balloting.

Ohio passed a law to redistrict. The Dems think the split should be 8-7 Rs with voting at 55%-45% (10-5 now). The 5 ds come from Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati. Toledo, Athens The Ds ate delusional in thinking they will get more seats. Trump won 80 out of 88 counties. JJordan (4th) won his seat 74-26

Screw the Democrats over just as hard as you possibly can. Fair is Fair. Since Blue States do that to Republicans, the least Red States can do is return the favor.

“Ohio passed a law to redistrict. The Dems think the split should be 8-7 Rs with voting at 55%-45% (10-5 now). The 5 ds come from Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati. Toledo, Athens”

Akron, not Athens.

The state is forced to redistrict before the 2026 midterms because of a law which states that any plan which does not have “bipartisan” support in the state legislature can be valid for 2 elections only, and the current map has been used twice now.

The OH GOP tried initially for a map which would give their party something like a 12-3 advantage or 11-4 at worst. What they’ve ended up with is 10-5 due to:

1. The OH Supreme Court, which is overwhelmingly *Republican* controlled, rejecting the GOP maps FIVE times because they were too “partisan”. That’s right, the Republican Court came to the rescue of the Democrats.

What makes anyone think they won’t do it again?

2. Incompetence, blowing easily winnable elections especially in the Toledo district by being outworked, MASSIVELY outspent, and putting up supposedly “bad” candidates.

The *current* plan was supposed to be 11-4 (not 10-5) but the GOP forfeited the Cincinnati district and got rid of Steve Chabot (a decent conservative) — and then failed to pick off the low hanging fruit in the Akron and Toledo districts both in 2022 and 2024.

“I hate gerrymandering. I hate it as a concept. I hate that it happens. But also you know what I hate? Is that the country is gerrymandered right now?” said Moore.

If you hate that the country is gerrymandered, why don’t you work to produce fair election maps across the country.
