20-year-old woman killed crossing Clairmont Road in Brookhaven Police say dump truck driver left scene, returned 20 minutes later Omar Ali charged with vehicular homicide and felony hit and run BROOKHAVEN, Ga. - A 54-year-old Mableton man has been arrested in connection with a deadly pedestrian crash Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Dresden Drive, according to the Brookhaven Police Department.
What we know: Investigators say Omar Ali was driving a dump truck around 12:06 p.m. when he struck a 20-year-old woman who was lawfully crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. Police said Ali was turning right from Dresden Drive onto Clairmont Road at the time of the crash.
The woman died at the scene.
Authorities said Ali initially left the area after the collision but returned about 20 minutes later, where he was taken into custody.
Using nearby traffic cameras, the Brookhaven Police Traffic Safety Unit determined that the victim had the right of way when she was hit.
Ali has been charged with vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

My wife was born and raised in Mableton, Georgia. I grew up just five miles away. I can safely say that, back in our day, there were was nobody named “Omar Ali” in Mableton.
The church we went to when living in Georgia is in Mableton. Kind of congested, but a nice town.
It likely took that long to realize what happened and to circle the block. It’s NY who am I to know????.
My first house was in Georgian Hills neighborhood, a half-mile from that intersection. Dresden a 2-lane road, Clairmont, a 5-lane. N Atlanta, but ITP (inside-the-perimeter)

A sane legal system would see Mr. Ali hang by the neck until dead within a fortnight.
Maybe he just screwed up real bad and he’s not illegal nor evil, but a woman died tragically and that is all?
Lot to pay attention to when driving a dump truck....not like driving a pickup.

This is a common situation. The driver was probably looking left for oncoming traffic, and the woman was probably looking across the street (or at her phone) with the truck approaching from behind her and to her left. I have learned to look around completely in either role, after a few close calls.
Tragic, but probably an accident. Leaving the scene is another matter entirely.
