Graham Platner shared a video of himself shirtless, sporting the tattoo, on a popular progressive podcast. He denied that he himself ever held Nazi views, instead claiming he had gotten the tattoo while “inebriated” as a young adult without knowing what it meant.

He seems like somebody who likes attention, and tattoos. Some of his tattoos have become muddled and not much more than dark smudges over time. So it’s possible that he saw the Totenkopf and just liked the sinister looking design, but had no one ever asked him about it?
Maybe not. That’s now a matter of self inflicted political damage.

Worse still, it’s in blackface.
The Totenkopf was a Prussian hussar symbol long before the Nazis existed, and had a long history with German military organizations. During World War II Wehrmacht (German Army), Luftwaffe and SS units used it. The SS was not formally part of the German Wehrmacht (”Defense Force”), but obviously had a military role. The Totenkopf was adopted by the SS units engaged as guards in concentration camps and extermination units, and the association has stuck for obvious reasons.
There is no innocent explanation for wearing a symbol so closely associated with the very worst Nazi crimes.
If that statement were true he would have long ago changed or removed the tattoo. But he still sports it with pride.
