“Opulence may not be the best optics right now.”

The country is richer than ever thanks to tariffs.

The long train of abuses and usurpations your govt did to the current President is a FA that deserves a complete and utter demolition of the entire DC enemy occupied district FO.

'In between China, Russia, everything else that we deal with, it's going to be a great ballroom... It is starting right behind us.'

Trump opened the gold curtains behind him to unveil the construction site.

'It will be demolished,' he said. 'Everything out there is coming down and it will be replaced by the most beautiful ballroom.'

Winning!

“The new ballroom is supposed to be privately funded, with Trump chipping in himself.

What do you mean “supposed to be” you jerk?”

It was a reasonable post, unlike your response. Trump doesn’t always keep his funding promises.

An artist rendering was published several weeks ago. It blends well with the entire structure.

The east wing was originally a single story with a small entrance and cloak room built in the early 1900s. It was rebuilt in the 40s into what we know it as now. So it's about 80 years old, hardly original. But then again, Truman gutted the entire inside of the original structure, there is nothing of it left including the original Lincoln bedroom. It was rebuilt faithfully but it's also all 80 years old, as is the west wing. The white has has been modified often over the decades.

The everything-Trump-does-is-barbaric crowd is losing their mind as if he's tearing out the Lincoln Bedroom (too late, Truman already did that) but this is office space for First lady and staffers, big deal.

“The presidency is SUPPOSED to awe visitors with the power of our country. This will.”

Wherever did you get that idea?

Always thought that myself and also read that Trump said it, too. How do YOU view the presidency?

I agree with you, Mairdie.
As Socrates, Oscar Wilde and Ralph Waldo Emerson have said:

including moderation!”

What was in the east wing that’s being demolished? Was it staffer offices that Trump is getting rid of? Or the bedrooms that the Clinton’s used for all their “pals”? If so, why keep those rooms and a renovation isn’t a bad idea.

That being said, the optics does play into the no kings accusation so timing isn’t great.

I hate all of the gold in his decorating.

It has nothing to do with HIM. It’s just a style I find “over the top.”

But, the next folks can paint it.

“I hate all of the gold in his decorating.”

Agree. It’s awful. Wretched excess.

Understated elegance is better, IMO.

The best part about it is that it will always be known as “The Trump Ballroom”.

The White House needs to be renovated ever so often. Burned by the British in 1812, rebuilt. About to collapse in the Truman administration it was rebuilt. The workers said they could still smell the burn damage from 1812. Now time again.

The East Wing of the White House was constructed in 1942.

It is said to cover an underground Emergency Operations Center.
