Moscow appears to have rejected President Trump’s latest call to freeze the current state of the front lines in Ukraine, reiterating that “Russia’s stance doesn’t change.”
Addressing Trump’s proposal over the weekend that the war in Ukraine end immediately and that each side keep the land they currently hold, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov scoffed at the prospect of allowing Kyiv to keep parts of the Donbas region.
“This topic was repeatedly raised in various forms during contacts between Russia and the US. The Russian side answered every time, this answer is well known: the consistency of Russia’s position doesn’t change,” Peskov told the local media.

"Let it be cut the way it is. It's cut up right now. I think 78% of the land is already taken by Russia. You leave it the way it is right now," Mr. Trump told reporters Sunday on Air Force One, apparently referring specifically to the Donbas region. "They can negotiate something later on down the line. But I said cut and stop at the battle line. Go home. Stop fighting, stop killing people."
President Trump
Russia’s war on the Ukrainian mainland began in April 2014 in the Donets Basin (Donbas), named after the Siversky Donets River. The Ukrainian positions there are particularly well fortified. While Russia has managed to almost completely conquer the Luhansk Oblast of the Donbas, Moscow has achieved little success in the Donetsk Oblast since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The strong fortifications, geographical location and geological characteristics of the part of Donbas held by the Ukrainian army are militarily significant. If the territory were to fall under Russian control, this would open the way for further advances into the interior of Ukraine. It is also an area with significant natural resources.

Then give them the tomahawks and get on with it.
Some here may not want to face the simple realities of the world, but demanding in “peace” negotiations that you be given additional territory that you haven’t won in the war of conquest is outrageous.
If Putin truly wants to end the war then he should end it. He knows perfectly well that Russia has nothing to fear from a peace agreement that is being policed by Europe and the United States.
Not that he had anything to fear in the first place.

Putin will not end the war of attrition. He is methodically making Ukraine unlivable by attacking residential buildings, utilities and transport infrastructure.
I guess just let them keep killing themselves then.
Asking to “keep” territories they have not won is not a serious proposal.
There is war because Putin wants war. Putin is the “warmonger”.
Normally, to say Putin does not care about his citizens casualties would be an emotional statement.
But I’m relatively certain that he doesn’t care one bit and he also doesn’t care if the Ukraine he takes over is in Ruins nor does he care if he lets it stay that way for many years so long as he takes out if it whatever he wants.
And tragically, from what I know of the Russian psyche, it appears his citizens will accept this from him.
What the Russians now want is lines on maps. Russia and Russians can live with what they have snatched, or another 100,000 or so Russian soldiers can die.

I have to agree with you on this. Might as well give them the Tomahawks and let the war continue. Hopefully, unlike Russia, the Ukrainians would target infrastructure and not civilian hospitals/houses/apartment buildings like Vlad the Invader does.
Vlad the invader wants (or needs) victory, not peace. I suspect he will get neither.
May the Best Dictator win. Dictator Putin vs Dictator Zelensky.
Selfishly from the perspective of the U.S., the war going on both weakens Russia, and pressures NATO allies to invest more in their military. Those two things will have the effect of reducing the burden of NATO commitments.

Vlad has nearly nothing to show for the past month except for dead Russians.
So, Ukraine will continue to lose and lives and territory until it finally surrenders.
Yes, its clear that its Putin that wants to continue the war/invasion.
Putin knows Trump’s weakness. Trump’s weakness which he has signaled countless times is that he is desperate for a “deal”, meaning to end the war. As Trump wrote in his Art of the Deal (I have a copy), never let your opponent know that you want something badly. The price for it will only go up. Putin knows Trump wants an end to the war badly (in part for the peace prize) so he won’t relent. I hope someone in Trump’s administration presents him with a copy of The Art of the Deal.

Why freeze when you are constantly making progress.
