Most Virginians have “accepted the apology” of state attorney general nominee Jay Jones for his disturbing, violent threats about a Republican legislator, a top Democrat is saying. However, recent polling and betting odds cast doubt on that claim.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin said in an interview published Friday in Politico that Jones’s violent texts in 2022 about killing Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert were “reckless and unacceptable.”
However, he also said that Virginia voters were forgiving.
“I believe that most Virginians have accepted that apology and that they’ll elect Jay Jones as the next attorney general,” Martin predicted.
Recent polling is telling a different story.
A poll released this week by the Trafalgar Group showed a drop in support for the Democratic candidate, with Jones now having the support of only 43 percent of voters, down from nearly 49 percent earlier in the month, according to the Hill.
In turn, his Republican opponent, Jason Miyares, received a major boost, with support growing nearly four percent, from 45 percent to 48.9 percent.
While some news outlets call Trafalgar a “right-leaning” or “right-wing” polling group, other measurements also seem to support Jones being damaged by the news of his violent texts, which were first revealed in early October by the National Review.
Newsweek reported this week that Jones’s chance of winning had plummeted in betting odds sites, which can often predict outcomes. According to the news magazine:
Jones held a 53 percent chance of winning in Polymarket’s odds as of October 7, but that has steadily dropped since. On Thursday, Miyares had a 68 percent chance of winning, while Jones had roughly a 33 percent chance of winning.

What is the text of the non-apology? I never read that. Leftists never apologize, they just spout passive agressive bullshirt.
Besides, some things are simply disqualifying. You can be forgiven, sure. But he has no business in government at any level, much less AG of a state.
Independent voters will have to split vote in order for him to win. Hope that works.
“What is the text of the non-apology? “
He presented himself as the victim because these texts were released while he was campaigning and they have harmed his campaign. (It was an eyebrow raising event.)
Ha! Yep, I knew it was going to be something like that. What a wanker. It’s truly jaw dropping how standards of conduct have fallen for everything. Anything goes, barely an inconvenience.
I bet if threats were made to THEIR families, they wouldn’t be so ‘forgiving’.
They are so stupid that they will swallow whatever 💩🥪 the dems push their way.
And that is how the dem party likes it. Do whatever massa says.
Orwell nails it again.
Hope the Dems stay home with bad weather. May be snowing that day.
The whole concept of “apology” should not even be a thing in politics. There’s no way to determine the sincerity of an apology since words are cheap and easy.
Taking action to remedy the situation is the only way to show sincerity. In this case, JJ should establish a trust fund for the college education of his opponent’s children, or take similar action that would be a sacrifice for him.
100% Democrats agree with him.
With Virginia’s early voting policy, isn’t this a moot point now since (I assume) a majority of VA voters have already voted and can’t take back their vote if they changed their mind.
Does anyone know what percentage of VA voters have already voted in this election?
Dem voters agree with what he said.
Virginia republicans are finally catching on to the dem game...
Jay Jones-D ehumanizing. WORDS
How could any sane voter cast a ballot for a guy that is "supposed" to be the chief law enforcement officer for the state, who not only thinks along those lines, but is bold enough to publicly broadcast those thoughts? Imagine the bizarre actions he might consider, and take and YOU PERSONALLY could very well be the target of those actions!
They might forgive, but they cannot forget. A man who fantasizes about executing another man and wishes death upon that man’s family makes a certain impression.
Jay Jones has made it clear that he views infliction of death and pain to be a political mechanism. That reflects a person who neither “forgives” others nor deserves forgiveness. Handing a Himmler like that the power to prosecute, imprison, and cause execution is irresponsible and unacceptable.
A coerced apology does not change the underlying intent behind the statement. I think most people see the truth of the matter: Jay does not believe in the apology and it was made for political expediency. The intent is no less true today than it was when the statement was penned.

Excellent observation. Your thought should spread far and wide.
