Andrew Cuomo is still behind — and he’s blaming Curtis Sliwa

“There is no Curtis as a candidate. There’s Curtis as a spoiler,” Cuomo said to radio host Sid Rosenberg. “If Curtis is not in the race, I win. And that’s a choice for Republicans. Do you vote for Curtis so you can say ‘I voted Republican’ and wind up electing Mamdani? Or do you vote for me?”

Polling suggests Cuomo is overstating his case. The Fox News poll released Thursday had 52 percent of likely voters supporting Mamdani. Cuomo, who was in second with 28 percent, would need to pick up all 14 percent of Sliwa voters, the 2 percent still voting for Mayor Eric Adams even after he dropped out of the race, the 2 percent supporting another one of the three longshot independent candidates also on the ballot and the 3 percent of undecided voters. And even then, Cuomo would still need to flip some Mamdani voters.

Of course, polls reflect just one moment in time, and Cuomo has reason to doubt them, given that polling didn’t predict Mamdani’s 13-point win in the primary. But even the typically proud former governor admitted his poor position Friday when Rosenberg asked if he could win with Sliwa still in the race.

“Very, very, very hard mathematically. Very, very hard,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo floated a theory that Republican leaders were keeping Sliwa in the race because they think a Mamdani mayoralty would help the GOP in swing congressional seats. And he said that President Donald Trump could force Sliwa out to help him.

“You know what Trump would do? One phone call. You call the chairman of the Republican Party, (Ed) Cox, and you say ‘I want the guy out of the race,’” Cuomo said.

Rosenberg, who said he’s a friend of Sliwa and talks to him “four or five times a day” said he’d try...

I don’t live in the area but if I did, I would vote Curtis.

If Curtis dropped out I would write in Curtis.

No possible way on the planet I vote for Cuomo. I would sit home first. My vote is not owned. I vote for who EARNS MY VOTE

Thbbbbbbbbp! How are you any different from Commie Madmani? Maybe if you didn't kill so many old people during the common cold shutdown you wouldn't have to worry about Sliwa siphoning votes. Most of those poor suckers probably voted for you.

What a dumbass.

Cuomo instead could have offered Sliwa a real position to help law enforcement with teeth for his backing.

His ego wouldn’t let him.

Enjoy a commie NYC.

Cuomo had NO business running in the first place. He resigned as governor because he was unfit. He is NOT entitled to Sliwa’s votes. He has done NOTHING to earn them. He was beaten by the commie in the primary, despite having more money and name recognition. Despite a lifetime of scandals and privilege, he has learned nothing.

I live far away but still find the race interesting and am listening to the debate in the background as I work. Sliwa is the only one I’d vote for if i did live there.

Cuomo should bow out and turn himself into prison.

Cuomo is just like Mamdani- but at least Mamdani is honest about what he wants to do, while Cuomo will say what he thinks his audience wants to hear....

I understand Curtis was a disappointment in the debate. Did not wear his red cap. Would not advise NYPD to cooperate with the National Guard.

Cuomo murdered elderly people for profit while Mamdani would have been a 9/11 hijacker

Sliwa is a good guy.
Cuomo is trash.

But it’s not that simple. Sliwa has no reasonable path to victory. So unfortunately, a vote for Sliwa is essentially a vote for the Muslim communist Mamdani.

And a win for Mamdani would mean, among other things, a great victory for Islam.

🙁

He had fun with the FA part.

Don’t think he’ll have much fun with the FO part.

Democrats don't want to admit that being a different type of democrat is not appealing to voters.

And democrat voters? Being a seemingly normal person who votes for politicians who support abnormal outcomes.

Unfortunately, voters can only make a difference by voting for the people who end up being the candidates. If normal New Yorkers want better results they will need better candidates.

Both Republicans and Democrats feel that it is owned. Just like those that will claim Perot should have dropped out.
