Tunnel Connecting Russia, US May Be Built in Less than 8 Years, at $8 bln — RDIF Head

According to Kirill Dmitriev, the tunnel with a railroad and cargo link, will unlock joint resource exploration

MOSCOW, October 17. /TASS/. A tunnel crossing the Bering Strait and connecting Russia and Alaska can take less than eight years to build, at the cost that does not exceed $8 billion, Special Presidential Envoy for economic cooperation with foreign countries and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev said.

"Imagine connecting the US and Russia, the Americas and the Afro-Eurasia with the Putin-Trump Tunnel - a 70-mile link symbolizing unity. Traditional costs are $65bln+, but the Boring Company [tunnel construction service and equipment company founded by Elon Musk] tech could reduce it to <$8bln. Let's build a future together!" he wrote on the X social network.

In his words, the tunnel with a railroad and cargo link, will unlock joint resource exploration. At the same time, he said, joint US-Russia projects create jobs and boost economies.

"RDIF has already invested in and built the first ever Russia-China railroad bridge. The time has come to do more and connect the Continents for the first time in human history. The time has come to connect Russia and the US," Dmitriev said.

HMMM...

Why would we want that?

Among other things, couldn’t that be used by China if they wanted to invade?

The risks outweigh any benefits

I’m not sure how much economic sense this makes even if you put aside the political issues. Siberia and Alaska are fairly remote so transporting materials between them doesn’t provide much economic benefit. Shipping probably still is cheaper.

A really stupid idea. Why anyone in US would want to do anything with Russia as long as Putin is there.

Both Siberia and Arctic Alaska are rich in mineral resources its good for both country an to connect Russian end to Russian rail system and us to the Alaskan rail system would be huge economic benefit to both countries. We are moving on from ongoing continuous wars of deep state to huge opportunities in peaceful world thanks to Trump!

Building a railroad tunnel between two continental plates has its own set of challenges.

Similar to the proposed bridge between Calabria and Sicily, Italy.

Isn’t this section of the world a major earthquake zone between Russia and Alaska?

Another minor issue. What gauge railroad track do they use. Russia’s is a different size than the North American.

Why, pray tell, would we want to do something so obviously stupid?

Yeah, they could all come through a tunnel and emerge from a tunnel the size of a rail line. Impossible to defend against that. The dreaded attack through a tunnel.

No doubt with Elon Musk's tunneling company, "The Boring Company."   Shrinking the globe nonstop.

Yeah, I’m not against it politically. But Alaska is not a manufacturing center, neither is Siberia. And I sure would not be thrilled about being in the tunnel in that earthquake zone. I agree with your assessment

Exactly! Why would *we* want it. Who would benefit and who would be harmed? I think I can guess.

Is that on the edge of Ring of fire? How big of an issue is seismic activity in the region?
