BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - Five shootings in 24 hours across the Magnolia state left at least 9 dead this weekend.
Most of the shootings happened after high school football games on Friday night.
The last two happened at Alcorn State and at a Jackson State University event at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
At Alcorn State, one person is dead, and two others were injured near the Industrial Technology Building.
Officials said no arrests have been made at this time.
Jackson Police Department Interim Chief Tyree Jones said a child was hit by gunfire near the tailgate section during JSU’s homecoming festivities.
That child was taken to the hospital, and there is no suspect in custody.
At least six people are dead in Leland, Mississippi after a football game Friday night turned deadly.
Area hospitals are treating 10 injured victims, according to officials.
Leland Mayor John Lee confirmed the shooting took place off school property on the town’s main street.
No suspect has been identified at this time, and Jackson Field Office Special Agent Robert Eikhoff urged the public to come forward if they have any information.
“You might’ve seen something, you might’ve heard something, or know someone who did,” Special Agent Eikhoff said. “We ask you to share that information. Speak up, share, give us that opportunity to get these subjects off the street and bring peace and tranquility to our community.”
About three hours south of Leland, Heidelberg High School celebrated their homecoming football game, where a shooting left two dead.
Officials say one person was found shot and killed on the school’s baseball field, with the other found dead in a tailgating area near the bleachers.
One other person was injured at the scene.
Jasper County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the arrest of 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe.
In Rolling Fork, shots rang out at South Delta High School’s football game.
One injured person is now being treated in the hospital.
The Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department says two people were arrested Saturday in connection with the shooting.
Governor Tate Reeves put out a statement regarding these shootings.
“The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently assisting local and federal law enforcement agencies... and those responsible will be brought to justice,” Governor Reeves said.
The motives behind these shootings are currently unknown.
No one in custody as of yet.
You need witnesses and apparently nobody saw nuthin.
One shooter, 6 dead? Either a very good shot, or a lot of spraying into a crowd.
Arrests instead of “no suspects” would have made headlines.
I feel sorry for that little girl innocently caught in the crossfire of selfish, violent types.
Similar to a little boy in the back seat of a car on I-94 in Detroit hit by a bullet intended for her father. That was during a rash of freeway shootings that went on for weeks in Detroit. Total of 67 freeway shootings in Detroit in 2021.
“June 2021: A 2-year-old boy, Brison Christian, was killed and his 9-year-old brother was injured in a mistaken-identity shooting on I-75. The attack prompted the creation of “Operation Brison,” a law enforcement task force focused on combating freeway shootings.”
And the usual stories, every couple of months, of a child or grandmother inside a house and hit by a round fired outside by strangers.
By the way, a shot from somewhere that goes into a school yard or other building property is recorded in the statistics as “a school shooting.”
The FBI got involved and announced five arrests:
Terrogernal S. Martin, 33, is the most recent arrest. Martin, Morgan Lattimore, 25, Teviyon Powell, 29, and William Bryant, 29, are all charged with capital murder. Latoya Powell, 44, is charged with attempted murder.
Those five suspects were charged in the Leland shooting whick killed six people.
White nationalists no doubt
I'm a birder, and one thing I've learned, you don't find a lot of the more beautiful and pleasant birds where other birds move in that are more aggressive and bullying. They simply die out or go away.
There are a lot of simple pleasures and events decent folks enjoyed back in the day that are falling by the wayside because they have become too dangerous because of thugs and criminals. Maybe high school football games will eventually suffer the same fate.
Time for liberals and Dem’s to come out with their time worn “gun control legislation” yet again.
Don’t ask, Boo Boo
Don’t ask, Boo Boo
Thanks for the update. That’s pretty quick work for the FBI!
My thoughts as well. We love HS sports, and even if we only know ONE kid on the team or their parents, we go to the local basketball, football games and wrestling matches all fall and winter.
I don’t feel unsafe where I live, but you never know.
Grok:
Leland, Mississippi, is currently led by a Democratic mayor and a city board (alderpersons) consisting of two Democrats and three independents. No Republicans hold elected office in the city government as of the June 3, 2025, municipal general election.
“Terrogernal,” Teviyon,” and “Latoya” are expected. “Martin,” “Morgan,” and “William” are not.
Damn it’s guns that keep breaking loose and killing people, not the people pulling the trigger. /s
Ehhhhhhh....they shot the wrong 2 year old 9 year old?
9 dead across the entire state. Chicago experiences that number of killings (give or take) every weekend on one block.
“Time for liberals and Dem’s to come out with their time worn “gun control legislation” yet again”.
We have more than enough gun legislation, they don’t want to prosecute it because it fills the prisons with Blacks.
They want to disarm the general law abiding people so we can be forced to live like slaves in their “perfect” world.
True that!
