Animal rights groups are now calling on the Canadian government to intervene and seize the whales.

Over two dozen beluga whales at the now-defunct Marineland amusement in Niagara Falls, Ontario, could be put down, as reported by Buffalo Toronto Public Media.

The park said that if it doesn't get a commitment for financial help, it would have to start euthanizing the 30 beluga whales.

The Canadian Fisheries Minister said Marineland is responsible for the whales, but Marineland said it has no other option after permits were denied to export the whales to China.

NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO (WKBW) — 30 beluga whales at the now-defunct Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, could be euthanized, as reported by Buffalo Toronto Public Media.

The park said that if it doesn't get a commitment for financial help, it would have to start euthanizing the whales.

"We need humane solutions for these animals. It's not easy by any means; it's going to be messy and some animals might not survive. But they shouldn't be euthanized for financial reasons," said Melissa Matlow, World Animal Protection Canada Campaign Director.

The Canadian Fisheries Minister stated that Marineland is responsible for the whales, but Marineland claims it had no other option after its permits to send the whales to China were denied.

"I don't think we should be bailing out Marineland," said Wayne Gates of the Canadian Parliament. "There's a thousand acres of land there that I'm sure they'll sell at some point in time. But,...

They spent their entire lives in captivity, and you think that they can just be released into the wild and survive?

They also shoot sled dogs in Yellow Knife, when there are no more customers for them.

Dying in the ocean would better death than just outright killing them. Besides, I don’t believe for a minute they would die in the wild, any more so than anything else living in the ocean. Yeah, all things die eventually.

I'd guess that they'd have some survival instincts. If you asked them, they'd probably choose to try. Killing them outright is cynical.

These animals don’t know anything about the ocean.

Whales shouldn’t be kept in zoos and aquariums unless they’re found injured and can’t be reintroduced to their proper environment.

You seem ignorant about animals raised by humans in captivity.

If you could no longer keep a pet dog, would you leave it in the woods somewhere instead of having it euthanized?

After all, everything has to die eventually...

Not much of a market for beluga whales, especially in bulk. They're hoping some large SeaWorld type establishment steps forward but the logistics of shipping 30 16-foot creatures have to be pretty steep. Not that I've ever tried.

The Japanese do eat whale sushi. Just sayin'.

You also seem ignorant of how euthanasia is conducted by veterinarians.

It’s a lot easier than dying of starvation in a wild you don’t understand.

You’d be surprised at what I understand. I can still decide differently on a lot of matters.

The only thing I don't understand about this is why not just let the Chinese take them for their zoo?

Better than killing them with a neurotoxin and then shredding their bodies.
