Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday the U.S. will host a new Qatari air force facility in Idaho, where pilots will train to fly F-15s.
Hegseth said the Trump administration has signed the letter greenlighting the building of a Qatar Emiri air force contingent at the Mountain Home Air Force Base located in southwestern Idaho.
Qatar Emiri air force is the air arm of Qatar’s armed forces.
“Location will be host to a contingent of Qatari F-15s and pilots to enhance our combined training, increase lethality, interoperability,” Hegeseth said Friday. “It’s just another example of our partnership.”
Mountain Home Air Force Base, located in Elmore County, already hosts Singapore’s air force F-15SG fighter jets.
Hegeseth announced the agreement sitting alongside Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Qatari defense minister who was at the Pentagon on Friday.
The Defense chief said the agreement showcases the strength of the partnership between Qatar and the U.S. and added that Doha’s officials played a key role in securing the Gaza peace deal.
“You have been a core part of what has unfolded in Gaza, a historic moment. We’re grateful for the strong partnership that we have, the way you support our troops at Al Udeid, Your Excellency, the line of communication we’ve had together,” Hegseth said, referencing the U.S. military base in Qatar.
Earlier this month, Trump penned an executive order to increase U.S. protection of Qatar following an Israeli strike targeting Hamas leaders in Doha that killed six people, including a Qatari security officer.
“In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability,” the Oct. 1 order says.

Qatar’s money talks to everyone and it supports Turkey and Erdogan too.
. The truth is that Qatar follows the Saudi's lead and is a Saudi proxy in the Middle East so if Trump seals the deal with the Saudis then Qatar follows. On a practical note, the US is making a major purchase of F-15s that are basically an enhanced version the Qatar variant of the F-15.
I get the impression that Trump and Hegseth are setting this up to get Qatar to underwrite the costs of the USAF transitioning into the new Silent Eagle
Smart move, actually given our massive budget constraints combined with our need to re invest in B-21, F47 and the collaborative drone programs.

We do this for other countries. The Germans conduct much of their flying training is in New Mexico. Singapore conducts a lot of training out of Guam.
None of these countries have large areas where pilots can train hard and fully work thier capabilities. We have the room, and we get reimbursed for portions of the costs.
All three countries host U.S. bases and pay significant portions of their upkeep.
Having performed contract work up there in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, I expect it will be a complete cultural shock to those young men. An extremely cold climate, especially when the north wind blows, and a town with many LDS church members. But unless liquor laws have been liberalized, only beer and wine at grocery stores and the hard stuff at state liquor control stores. City activities are in Boise just under an hour’s drive to the west.

The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is the largest US military base in the Middle East.
It would seem like a pretty snotty thing to do to not allow Qataris to train here in the US.
