KILIFI, Kenya (AP) — The daily grind of putting food on the table is stressful for people the world over, especially for women, who still provide the bulk of that work. A changing climate adds to the anxiety.
Kaloleni in Kilifi County is one of Kenya ’s poorest areas. Women carry buckets of water for miles through the dusty landscape. Homes are mostly built of mud and have no indoor plumbing. Maize plants wither in the heat.
“These communities are struggling to grow their crops and have to spend money on food,” said Zul Merali from The Aga Khan University, who has set up a local institute for mental and brain health. “This creates a lot of pressure, particularly on women, because they are in charge of making sure that kids and families are fed.”
Mercy Githara is the mental health and psychosocial manager at the Kenya Red Cross. In her experience, the mental fallout from droughts or floods is very real.
“There is a lot of psychological distress among these communities, and some of them have developed mental health conditions such as depression,” she said.
She wants to see a greater emphasis on mental health. “Ensure that communities that are facing climate change can be able to access mental health services,” she said.

The growing season ‘climate’ in Florida is warmer and longer than the ‘climate’ in North Carolina. So we grow different crops.

There would be a lot more money in the budget for improving the lives of Kenya’s poorest citizens if so much of what is available or obtained from foreign nations was not being used to fight Islam terrorists.
Per one article I glanced at Kenya’s national security budget is about 2.2 Billion dollars.
