Reactionary, Neo-Confederate Portland
American Greatness ^ | 6 Oct, 2025 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/06/2025 5:27:48 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Portland’s left-wing mobs and officials are waging a neo-Confederate-style rebellion—defying federal law, protecting illegal aliens, and turning the city into a sanctuary for anarchy.

In blue cities across America—Portland, Oregon, especially—often violent protesters now seek to surround ICE facilities to stop federal officers from fulfilling their assigned and legal duties of arresting illegal aliens.

Some 10 million or more illegal aliens were allowed to enter the U.S. during the Biden years—illegally and thus without criminal or health checks.

Neither Antifa nor liberal urban America objected to such a flagrant disregard for the law. But both are now as intent on obstructing the legal enforcement of the law as they were earlier in favor of its illegal non-enforcement.

Much less did they care about the consequences of sending millions of foreign nationals into cities and counties where they swamped social services, spiked crime, and flooded emergency rooms and schools.

ICE has repeatedly presented data that show in its first rounds of deportations, it is concentrating on removing either criminal illegal aliens or those who have already been processed with deportation orders, somewhere between 70 and 90 percent of all current apprehensions.

No matter.

Left-wing protesters are swarming ICE headquarters in Portland to violently oppose all deportations, even those of known criminals and those who have already exhausted efforts to remain here illegally.

Why? The Democratic Party apparat knows that the public wants both secure borders and deportations of illegal aliens. Indeed, in part, it lost an election by its open-borders advocacy.

But Democrat officials feel that if street thugs like Antifa can surround and besiege ICE facilities in Portland, Oregon, then deportations will stop. Then, a de facto amnesty will follow for millions who entered the U.S. illegally—and will soon become Democratic constituents.

Sooner or later these politicians will have to be put into prison.

Who is paying for the distraction protests? Someone needs to find out where the money comes from to pay these protesters.

How will they pay any price? The local population hates ICE and completely supports the rioters like the article yesterday showed.

Abandon Portland and declare it an open city for illegals. Then cut off federal funding

Enclaves that cannot govern themselves must be governed by those who can.

I am sure they know who is funding these neo-confederates. The time will come when they will be called to account for their actions.

Obstructing a federal officer is a federal crime.

They can be locked up in a federal lock-up, tried before a federal judge, and sentenced to a federal prison.

Peerhaps the nation needs to place the “blue”̣(actually Marxist Red) statesinto a state of Reconstruction after the manner of the treatment of the Southern States post War Between the States. There is more reson for it now. After that war the southern states were beaten and rebellion was gone out of them but it is very much alive and active in California, Oregon, Illinois, New York, etc.

Typical VDH wisdom: For a party that has been quick to shout “insurrection,” it is ironic that Democrats and their useful, though violent, Antifa insurrectionists are in rebellion against the federal government and its agents.

As is his use of "neo-Confederate" in describing Antifa.

IMHO, the only part that VDH missed is pointing out Trump is merely executing the immigration rules as established by Congress (as granted to Congress by the U.S. Constitution's Article 1, Section 8). In other words, Trump and ICE are just doing their jobs. Thus, today's Dim neo-Confederates are probably more in violation of Constitutional authority law than their predecessor Dim neo-Confederates with their nullifications of debatable laws leading up to the Civil War.

Not really. The local DA will not charge them and the local judge will release them.

The local DA and the local judge have no say in federal offenses, unless they are federal attorneys (who President Trump has control over) and federal judges.

As a Californian, VDH thinks the term "Confederate" is a clever insult. In fact the real Confederates never behaved like that. They believed they had a right to independence from the United States and behaved like a nation state with a regular army and navy, rejecting guerrilla warfare and insurrectionary tactics.

There was an excellent panel on C-SPAN this past weekend featuring Gary Gallagher and several other Civil War historians discussing the reputation of Robert E. Lee. They pointed out that Lee and Jefferson Davis completely rejected the idea of guerrilla warfare.

I didn't pick up on that. IMHO, the words VDH used were particular about the nullification aspect, not the methods of violence to resist the federal laws. In fact, one of VDH's example (a century after the civil war) was Dim Gov Wallace using the guard (troops in uniform) at the Univ of Alabama, not antifa/gruella style tactics.

Everyone wants to call our opponents bad names.

Fine; call them communists. They are.

For whatever reason, Hanson wants to call them “neo-Confederates.” I guess years of propaganda has gotten to him. Maybe he wants to score some cheap points with the uneducated.

During the Obama years Sheriff's in the south and out west announced they would not enforce federal laws that violate the 2nd amendment. We all cheered.

Tom Homan has it right about federal/state jurisdiction: “If they (locals) don't want to help (enforce federal law) fine; just stay out of the way and don't cross the line.

The communists in Oregon and elsewhere have crossed the line and there is reason for federal action.

Hanson should never use the words “neo-Confederate” without mention of the constitution's supremacy clause and the extreme limitations of federal supremacy.

“Sanctuary” jurisdictions have functionally seceded from the United States.

They do not consider the current Administration to be a legitimate government. To them, it justifies insurrection.

Once that advances to armed insurrection, we will have the equivalent of the Spanish Civil War, with attendant destabilization and destruction of the economy.

This is what they really want.

“Whereas the laws of the United States have been, for some time past, and at the present and now, are opposed, and the execution thereof obstructed, in the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, by combinations too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, or by the powers vested in the Marshals by law, therefore, I, as Abraham Lincoln President of the United States, in virtue of the power in me vested by the Constitution and the laws, have thought fit to call out forth, and hereby do call out forth the militia of the several states, of the Union, to the aggregate number of seventyfive thousand, in order to suppress said combinations, and to cause the laws to be duly executed. The details, for this object, will be made known immediately communicated to the State authorities, through the War Department.”
