Government shutdown drags into weekend as Senate Democrats block GOP plan

Same trio of Democratic caucus members join Republicans in failed vote as both sides dig into positions

Senate Democrats blocked Republicans’ attempt to reopen the government again, all but guaranteeing that the government shutdown rolls through the weekend.

After a day off to observe Yom Kippur, lawmakers made little progress in finding an off-ramp to end the shutdown, which entered its third day on Friday. And as the government remains closed, both sides appear to be digging further into their positions.

Senate Republicans’ attempt to reopen the government failed on a largely party-line 54-44 vote for a fourth time, with the same trio of Senate Democratic caucus members — Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and Angus King, I-Maine — joining most Republicans in backing the bill.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., plans to bring the bill to the floor again and again in a bid to chip away at Democrats' largely unified front. He lamented the work that could be happening, like advancing spending bills and negotiating other bipartisan priorities, on the Senate floor rather than repeating the same exercise of trying to reopen the government.

"They have taken hostage the federal government and, by extension, the American people, who are the only losers in this," Thune said. "Everybody's talking about who wins and who loses and who gets the blame. That's not what this is about. This is about doing what's in the best interest of the American people. And what's in the best interest of the American people is keeping the government open and operating so it can continue to work on their behalf."

Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., demand that they get a seat at the table to negotiate a bipartisan continuing resolution...

Democrats are making Trumps job easy by highlighting the non-essential employees during this shutdown. They are they targets of cuts.

That’s odd. I just got an email from Jackie Rosen wanting to update me on the REPUBLCAN SHUTDOWN. Oddly enough my other useless senator voted Yay! Really odd.

If money is not allocated by Congress then the President does not have to spend it and no impoundment act can make him. Brilliant move Schumer!

I think Trump wants it shut down long enough to lay off a bunch of deadwood. Maybe close the Dept of Education. Maybe EPA.

Still waiting for somebody to explain why 60 votes are needed to end the shutdown when the GOP can “go nuclear” and eliminate this unconstitutional requirement? Am I missing something?

This is about doing what's in the best interest of the American people.

Where's the BUDGET?
THAT is what's in the best interest of the American people.

You haven't considered 'the shoe on the other foot' scenario?
Do you need me to elaborate?

When the shoe is on the other foot, the Democrats won’t be nice to us just because we were nice to them.

If that is true then show me when the Dems busted the 60-40 process when they were held up by Republicans in a similar situation.

If they wouldn't hold back in the future surely they've not held back in the past.

probably just Democrat Kabuki Theater that massively backfired ... they’ll cave as soon as they can figure out how to spin this as a “victory” ...

The filibuster is a "rule" created by the Senate. I think it may have worked in a different time.

However, I can see the Senate being reluctant to get rid of the filibuster because it would mean that they would have to follow up on their actions. Right now, they have the convenient excuse of blaming the filibuster for not getting anything done.
