What an awful headline.
I would guess that 3/4 of the people reading it would assume that Sliwa is the one who just dropped out of the race and -- now that Silwa is out the race -- Sliwa is free to make frank statements about Adams.
Of course that's not true. Adams dropped out. Sliwa is still in. Sliwa is speaking frankly while he campaigns.
I'd bet money that the headline writer is working against Sliwa.

As a NYC resident, I fervently wish Sliwa would drop out of the race. You’re right: any vote for him is a wasted vote.
From his comments and reactions, he is starting to sound like a simpleton. Is he even aware of how great a threat is Mamdani? Adams acted quite nobly in dropping out to allow for a greater counter-voting block.
Although a Republican, I will hold my nose and vote for Cuomo. I pray that others in the NYC GOP do the same.

Sliwa has done some good work in the past. But he now has a bad case of “It’s all about me.” He ego just won’t let him do what’s best for NYC.
We saw the same thing years ago with Ross Perot. And so the country got stuck with Bill Clinton and his wicked wife Hillary.
I've seen Sliwa asked the question of dropping out on several shows now, and I have to say, as charismatic as Sliwa is, his adamant refusal to step down makes me doubt his critical thinking skills and executive decision making ability.
If Sliwa's goal is to keep Mamdani out of Gracie Mansion, then the math says that Sliwa's share + Cuomo's share beats Mamdani's share of the vote.
I believe that if Cuomo dropped out, his share would not go to Sliwa, but if Sliwa dropped out, his voters would be more likely to migrate to Cuomo. If Sliwa stays in the race, Mamdani wins.
So, the gut check for Sliwa is this: Is Sliwa in the race for self-aggrandizement or for doing what's best for the residents of New York City? In third place, Sliwa is the spoiler, not the alternative.
It's time for Sliwa to accept the realpolitik of the situation, step down, and endorse Cuomo.
