President Donald Trump on Thursday announced sweeping tariffs on various household products, including imported kitchen cabinets and certain kinds of furniture – potentially adding even more costs to a category that has surged in price in recent months. Trump also announced heavy truck tariffs and pharmaceutical tariffs.
“We will be imposing a 50% Tariff on all Kitchen Cabinets, Bathroom Vanities, and associated products, starting October 1st, 2025. Additionally, we will be charging a 30% Tariff on Upholstered Furniture,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Thursday evening.
Various tariffs that Trump has imposed have already boosted furniture prices considerably over the past year. Overall, furniture last month cost 4.7% more than in August 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Living room and dining room furniture in particular has grown more expensive – rising 9.5% over the past 12 months, the BLS reported.
Furniture prices have surged as Trump hiked tariffs on China and Vietnam, the top two sources of imported furniture. Both countries exported $12 billion worth of furniture and fixtures last year, according to US Commerce Department data.
Furniture prices had largely fallen for the past two and a half years prior to Trump’s tariffs. But Trump said Thursday that foreign manufacturers have oversupplied the US market, and the tariffs were necessary to regain US manufacturing prowess.
“The reason for this is the large scale ‘FLOODING’ of these products into the United States by other outside Countries,” Trump said. “It is a very unfair practice, but we must protect, for National Security and other reasons, our Manufacturing process.”
Shares of Wayfair (W), RH (RH) and Williams-Sonoma (WSM) tumbled in after-hours trading.

Ikea crowd sad.
Ouch but you have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.
WHY would our pharmaceuticals be manufactured in third world countries anyway??? Lord knows we pay enough to have them made here.
And, definitely bring back furniture to NC. A friend purchased furniture for their beach house from a well known company and no sooner than it was unloaded and the delivery guys left, a swarm of TERMITES came out of the furniture!!! (I think they were Chinese termites!) Their house had to be tented and $25k later, it was good. (Ins didn’t pay from what I am remembering.)
Amish furniture makers smile quietly
Places like Hickory NC were once powerhouses for furniture manufacturing, let them be so again! America first!
There used to be manufacturing in small towns all over the South.
Wayfair isn’t going to like this!
My daughter bought a couch from them and when it FINALLY arrived the part behind the back cushions was some sort of black fabric and the underside of the seat cushions had the same black fabric. How cheap can you get!!!
The Demonrats allowed MIA to be kidnapped by foreign countries and Trump is on a mission to bring it back home!
I believe in reversible cushions, too.
The 1954, “Executive Suite” film was centered around a furniture factory.
Not only democrats. The Repubs were enthusiastic supporters of offshoring the factories. Tax breaks of all kinds and literally even subsidies to ship factories to China and elsewhere.
We must never forget that, lest we are tempted to think of Repubs as saviors.
There used to be manufacturing in towns in the north as well.
Both a furniture factory and a box factory where I grew up.
And the furniture was not made of glue and sawdust.
Around 90% of our pharmaceuticals are manufactured in China, I have read. I was doing some research on ivermectin, since some folks treat everything with it. Merck still makes a lot of it, they originally had the patent on it, so for those who don’t like big pharma, there’s that. They are one of the biggest. And one article claimed that over 90% of ivermectin, along with other pharmaceuticals is made in China, by several “big pharma” companies. At least one of the big manufacturers was in Wuhan....
American made furniture prices to SOAR.
Foreign made furniture and cabinets are flooding the US market! It is a national security crisis! Existential even! IKEA is destroying America!
Donald Trump will save us all from cheap furniture.
Furniture prices have surged as Trump hiked tariffs on China and Vietnam.
Good deal saw dust glue and veneer hit hardest and China meds.
“Trump said Thursday that foreign manufacturers have oversupplied the US market, and the tariffs were necessary to regain US manufacturing prowess.” This should have been explained in the first paragraph. Instead, it was buried in the report. The usual CNN cowardice.
