Argentina has launched a fresh bid to take over the 'illegally occupied' Falkland Islands in a move branded 'extraordinary' by a former head of the Royal Navy.
The announcement came during President Javier Milei's speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
The firebrand Argentinian leader told the summit that his country's claim to the South Atlantic island was 'legitimate' and 'unrenouncable'.
In a fiery speech that could outrage leaders in Downing Street, Milei called on the UK to open 'bilateral' talks over the 'sensitive and crucially important issue' of the so-called 'Islas Malvinas'.
'I wish to reiterate our legitimate claim in terms of sovereignty over the Malvinas and the surrounding maritime areas that continue to be illegally occupied,' he said.
'In spite of the fact that 80 years have elapsed since the creation of [the UN], colonial situations such as this one remain unresolved.
'For this reason, we call on the United Kingdom to resume bilateral negotiations.'
But his comments have angered the Royal Navy's former First Sea Lord, Admiral Lord Alan West.
The Labour peer, whose ship was sunk during the 1982 effort to retake the Falklands from Argentina, branded the president's comments 'extraordinary'.
The former naval commander warned Britain's Chagos Islands 'surrender' deal, which saw the UK hand sovereignty of the strategic archipelago back to Mauritius while leasing it from Diego Garcia, could have emboldened Milei.
'The British Government made it very clear that the sovereignty of the Falklands is not up for debate. They are an independent nation and under our protection. That's it,' he told the Mail.
'I think the Argentine president mentioning this is extraordinary. Doing this does not help at all. Perhaps this Chagos Island business makes him think we might hand it over.

Unless he figures with a weak, woke, and pliable "leader" Britain is ripe for the taking.
He shouldn’t have shipped Argentina’s gold to London last year...
Damn, which side to favor?
40 years ago, the Falklands war was right-wing firebrand Maggie Thatcher vs. a failing, leftist Argentine government.
Now, it’s right-wing firebrand Javier Milei vs. a failing, leftist British government.
I’d think Argentina had more important things to worry about…..
Let it go Brits. Your troops are needed to fight the Russians.
Recognize a Palestinian state and Pro-Israel Milei shows up to make a nasty speech.
Milei went to Spain and did that after they took the plunge to recognize Palestine last year.
How does Britain defend their actual occupation of the Falklands, while denouncing Israel’s fake occupation of “Palestine”?
Crazy times in crazy town. I think this this time I’ll go with the Argies because the real UK doesn’t exist anymore.
Anybody know what the people who live their want?
If reports I’ve seen are correct - the UK has something like a grand total of 50 total operable tanks, and zero suitable transport carriers to ship them abroad.
don’t make the Brits send Muslims with knives to the Falkland’s.
Why do I get the feeling he has domestic troubles at home? Expansionist speeches usually stem from domestic problems.
The figures with a weak, woke, and pliable “leader” Britain is ripe for the taking”
Yes but the thing is it could be the one thing save Starmer and commie party. A little war could be just the ticket.
For decades, whenever the Argentinian economy is about to crash, the president starts ranting about the Falklands.
Last time I checked, they were English speaking people of British ethnic origin who want to remain part of the UK.
This isn't about the people, or even the islands. It's about the resources in and under the water surrounding the islands.
“ Damn, which side to favor?”
Excellent observation
Man for man the Argentinians were no match for the brits.
Milei is in serious political trouble. Stoking Argentine nationalism over the Falklands is a diversion.
Yeah, all 12 of them.
