CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, one of 58 Democrats who didn't vote on a resolution to honor Charlie Kirk following his murder in Utah, said Tuesday that he would not vote to esteem Kirk's legacy.
Clyburn's comments came while he appeared on CNN, with the long-time member of Congress claiming that honoring the life of someone is different than honoring their legacy. Clyburn lamented Kirk's death while also saying he could not support Kirk's comments regarding race and the conservative activist's long-held opposition to affirmative action.
"His life is one thing," Clyburn said while on "NewsNight with Abby Phillips" on Tuesday. "His legacy is another. I honor everybody's life. But when you tell me that [Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson] was a diversity hire. When you tell me that you're going to give thought to whether a Black pilot is qualified. Something else is going on in your head. And that is a legacy that I will never vote to honor."
Clyburn's main critique of Kirk's work and legacy comes from several comments the conservative podcaster made throughout the years.
Examples Clyburn provided include when Kirk said, "if I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified," while on his live show.
Another example Clyburn listed included Kirk's comments on his show in 2023, when he said, "If we had said that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative action picks, we would have been called racists. Now they’re coming out and they’re saying it for us You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person’s slot to go be taken somewhat seriously."
Clyburn's comments inflamed the panel discussion, which included Hogan Gidley, a former press secretary of the 2020 Trump campaign. Gidley attempted to say Kirk's comments were taken "out of context." However, Clyburn defended his decision to vote no on a resolution honoring Kirk's legacy.
Kirk called the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, religion, sex, color and national origin, a "mistake." He also claimed Martin Luther King Jr. was a "bad guy."
"If they had taken legacy off, and just honored his life, which we asked them [Republicans] to do, you got my vote," Clyburn said. "But his legacy, I know what my fathers inherited from the legacy of the South."
Clyburn is a narcissist. He proved it when he supported George Floyd Legacy Project renaming of military bases but will not remember Charlie Kirk because he wants segregation and special privilege for certain groups. He believes merit must be removed.
His part of the state is the largest, and he is a 17th term Congressmam. He disrespects the people. Proved it by saying "Foxtrot Kirk, it's about MEEEEEEEE".
Sniffy Joe’s step-n-fetch it.
Makes sense - U.S. Democrat Rep. James Clyburn honors the “legacy” of St. George Floyd of Fentanyl.
He’s in an N-word state of mind and he just happens to be black.
This is Clyburn’s fate! Proverbs 10:7 “The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.”
Clyburn is 85 years old. He has done enough damage to the country, taking ‘credit’ for convincing Biden to run in 2020. Step aside, Clyburn, and take “Mad” Maxine with you!
Ghosts of institutionalized corruption from days gone by.
Clyburn fails to understand that affirmative action put underqualified people into various positions, and that’s a fact.
Of course Clyburn offered nothing showing what Kirk, and millions of others, say and believe are wrong. Only that no one is to dare challenge the orthodoxy of racist policies. If DEI and affirmative action and every other racist pro black policy is so bad, then why would so many unqualified blacks use them to get to positions they have no business in being in? I have seen first hand the destruction and danger of AA hiring in aerospace. The people who should be most upset are the qualified blacks people who are lumped in with the other blacks who can barely read or write yet still got an ME degree. As far as his other heroes like Katanji Jackson? Biden and herself admit she is only where she is because she is a black creature (I am not a biologist so can’t say if it is a female or not.).
I bet Clyburn insists on white doctors.
85 years old. Dirt Nap coming.
Another political slug who thinks it’s an accomplishment to die in office.
I hope he achieves his goal soon.
and elections based on color...
But when you tell me that [Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson] was a diversity hire.
U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, tell me Mr. Clyburn, would you want an affirmative action medical Dr. who graduated from med school in the bottom 10% of their class to perform open heart surgery on you vs. someone who graduated in the top 90%?
The sooner the better.
Democrats in the state legislator clashed with Republican Gov. Campbell in 1991 during redistricting, and a judge drew Clyburn his district to meet racial quotas. They have worked to expand his district, which I called “impossible for opponents because you need to be in five media markets to talk about issues.”
A district with no commonalities.
Clyburn must have listened to a lot of Kirk debates, podcasts, and appearances to come up with such an informed opinion. I bet he couldn’t pick Charlie out in a lineup of two.
EC
But he was all for George Floyd lying in state. Shows where their values are.
about to reach his expiration date, fortunately
It’s interesting. If you read the resolution it has, in essence, two parts. The first part recognizes that he was shot and that was bad. I think everyone supported that. The second part recognized his “contributions” and his stances in a way that indicated support.
If the shoe was on the other foot, would a Republican vote to show support for a Lib whose claim to fame was promoting abortion and illegal immigration?
I liked Charlie and agreed with him.
The GOP made this particular resolution into a political tool. It is a shame the idiots in the GOP could not make an inclusive resolution, but instead tried to score points off their opponents.
It’s distasteful and a reason why no one trusts Congress to do the right thing.
Who is surprised a leftist racist political lifer doesnt want to honor the legacy of a free speech, constitutional rights, prolife, pro law, common sense champion?
Feeling is mutual scumbag
“”I know what my fathers inherited from the legacy of the South.””
Apparently what he inherited was hatred of the white man...
