Hundreds of federal employees who were laid off following Elon Musk's cost-cutting measures through DOGE are being asked to go back to work.
The employees were given until the end of the week to accept or decline reinstatement by the General Services Administration, which manages government workspaces.
Anyone who accepts must report for work on Oct. 6 after what is being described as a seven-month paid vacation, during which the GSA has racked up high costs to stay in properties whose leases were slated for termination or were allowed to expire, reported The Associated Press.
"Ultimately, the outcome was the agency was left broken and understaffed," said Chad Becker, a former GSA real estate official. "They didn't have the people they needed to carry out basic functions."
Becker said the GSA has been in a "triage mode" for several months, adding that the sudden change from the major downsizing shows how Musk and his Department of Government Efficient had done too much, too soon.
The GSA isn't the only agency to ask its employees to return to work after being targeted by DOGE.
Last month, the IRS said it would allow some employees who took a resignation offer to remain at their jobs. The Labor Department also brought back employees who took buyouts, and the National Park Service reinstated some employees who were cut. ***

Is this part of the special TACO menu?
Great post.
The only consolation I can find is that at least it’s not Kamala at the helm...
There has been lots of good news over the last year, but I want some heads on a pike for what has been going on in this country for too long.
What’s not mentioned is the likely motivation for getting rid of employees to only bring them back. They are being brought back under completely new employment requirements that must be agreed upon. Likely addressing issues like working from home, conduct at work and outside of work. This approach is the cleanest way to address changes to conditions of employment.
“Becker said the GSA has been in a “triage mode” for several months, adding that the sudden change from the major downsizing shows how Musk and his Department of Government Efficient had done too much, too soon.”
Yep, I knew it. Radical extremism, Bull in a China Shop syndrome.
The recurring problem with cuts that don't target specific dead wood is that the talented ones also depart. I saw it several times in the military where they would offer cross-training away from Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs) (the AF version of an MOS) and too many of the talented ones would take it, with severely adverse consequences when the field was depleted.
So what happens when it is October 1st and there is no budget or budget extension?
It also probable that those returning, if this story from the propaganda media factories is even true, have been thoroughly vetted to remove those with anti-American sentiments.
You do massive up front buyouts and firings to get rid of the deadwood.
You soon discover the job functions that are legitimately needed and mission critical and which workers were productive.
You then rehire or reassign existing people to the critical job function that needs filling and move on with life.
This is in your ordinary, run of the mill failing and dysfunctional organization.
The US government is a very special case because it is loaded with political operatives, cronies and patronage positions.
Democrats have controlled hiring in the Federal Government since 2008 and under the Clintons for 8 years so there are tons of highly partisan and radical Democrats in the workforce.
The only way to solve the problem is by massive downsizing and selective hiring and rehiring which is exactly what is happening.
It is not a pretty process nor is it inexpensive - but it is necessary and it's worth it.
The current system was on track to cost Americans everything so it is worth whatever price we have to pay to reform the corrupt and broken system
bullshit: President Trump is preparing to FIRE tens of thousands of Fed employees if the Democrats refuse to fund the government ...
I seem to remember that rehiring select government employees was always part of the initial plan. The Administration is hardly “scrambling” to rehire all the workers laid off.
1. I know a young National Park ranger who was laid off for a month. She is an expert on range land use. They rehired her for good reasons that make economic sense.
2. Yesterday, I worked with a USDA rep on the phone. She was helpful, courteous and professional. She apologized for not calling me back sooner (still within the hour!) and said they were functioning with far fewer staff, but that the staff they have is getting the job done.
These are the results DOGE hoped to achieve.
Winning!
But yet if Schumer forces a shutdown they are gonna RIF hugely. All the ones they wanted to get rid off and more. Not sent home, fired. And all over Obamacare subsidies. Could turn out to be the most idiotic political decision of our lifetime.
Although she does seem "trustworthy", right???
@CheyenneUbiera
The Federal Employment numbers are gonna be nuts for the next couple of months.
Tens of thousands of people who “took the deal” earlier this year fall off the books on October 1st. Many of those people stopped working months ago…but how many have already gotten new jobs? I guess we will find out.
That stuff will not show up until the first week of November.
The government will then go through a “right-sizing” exercise. That will show up with greater hiring numbers in November and December. Practically speaking, it won’t settle down until first quarter of ‘26.
All of this is easily projected. Yet…look to see a lot of “shocked” faces and “unexpected” in the headlines.
With a government shutdown Trump might fire a ton more employees
Threads like this are great. All the cockroaches with terminal TDS scuttle out to blink in the light for a bit
Thank you for exposing yourself and others!
“Democrats have controlled hiring in the Federal Government since 2008 and under the Clintons for 8 years so there are tons of highly partisan and radical Democrats in the workforce.”
I suspect it was not much better under Bush II.
Hundreds, big deal. They evaluated and deemed the positions were worthwhile. Thousands of unneeded employees are no longer taking taxpayer money. On the other hand, not one indictment. Not a single one.
Are we “leaping”, “pouncing” or “scrambling”?
