UK and Poland vow to confront Russian aircraft violating Nato airspace

European allies have vowed to shoot down any Russian aircraft violating their airspace after Nato members accused Moscow of repeated incursions into the alliance’s territory in recent weeks.

“If another missile or aircraft enters our space without permission, deliberately or by mistake, and gets shot down and the wreckage falls on Nato territory, please don’t come here to whine about it,” Poland’s foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, told an emergency meeting of the UN security council in New York on Monday that was called to discuss a Russian airspace incursion over Estonia.

His warning was echoed by Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, who told reporters earlier in the day: “I want to be very clear. We will make a decision to shoot down flying objects without discussion when they violate our territory and fly over Poland. There is no room for debate here.”

On Friday, Estonia reported that three Russian MiG-31 jets had crossed into its airspace for 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw. The incident followed the entry of 20 Russian drones into Polish skies earlier this month, which Nato fighters shot down, and a separate Russian drone incursion into Romania.

The breaches have rattled Europe, particularly countries bordering Russia, fuelling fears that Moscow is testing Nato’s defence commitments.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said: “Russia clearly feels it can act with impunity in Ukraine, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, the whole of eastern Europe.”

He added: “Russia’s neighbours, not unreasonably, fear they could be next.”

Estonia, which called for the emergency meeting, told the security council that its record of the jets’ incursion was “based on hard facts, based on solid evidence, whatever Russia is claiming”.

Great,

The limeys & polaks are “champing at the bit” to get into a hot war with Russia.

I’d love to leave “them out there” all by themselves.

Russia has the habit of shooting down get-liners with hundreds of civilians onboard and never do any apology for it - despite the overwhelming proof they did it. They never had nuclear missile on Cuba either... until photos with absolute proof was shoved down their throats!

We must shot down every Russian plane violating our Western Borders.
Russia doest that, thus why shouldn’t we?

It’s time for Law and Order.

The odd that the shootdown of a Russian fighter jet in NATO airspace will trigger a “hot war” with Russia are effectively zero.

I’d also note that Biden was roundly criticized here and elsewhere for NOT shooting down a Chinese balloon that flew right over the central USA. The FReeper criticism was vociferous, and totally correct: That balloon should have been shot down the second it entered US airspace, with boats sent out to recover the wreckage.

Back in the Cold War, Russia shot down a Swedish intel flight that wasn’t even in Russian airspace. No “hot war” broke out.

More recently, Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet in Turkish airspace, and no hot war broke out.

Stick your sabre and threats where they belong.

I don’t care what European-NATO does, as long as the “Big Hitter”(The USA & Our Military) stays ambiguous.

When it comes to dealing with Russia, there are a lot of dominoes on the board.

Mig 31 cost about 51 million dollars
Cost of one Patriot Missile 4 to 7 million dollars depending on version. It is a one shot one kill on aircraft but not that good on on missile warheads.

This is a very acceptable cost to kill ratio. Just make damn sure and double sure it is in NATO airspace when downed. We know the frequencies the pilots are on as they know ours. Command them to return or tell them a Patriot Missile will shoot them down in mere minutes or less.

It should be noted that we have intentionally violated Russian airspace and were shot down. Both sides know the rules of the game. It was spy flights. The rescent violations of NATO airspace have nothing to do with spy flights. They have commercial aircraft that cross this area daily and have full knowlege of the area as we do theirs from our commercial flights. It was simply a provocation to see what we would do or not do.

It looks like Russia is trying to get itself into a war with Europe now. Maybe Ukraine wasn’t the guilty party in the war with Russia after all. Russia is on warpath but why? They will pay such a heavy price and for what exactly?

Yeah - Russia should be able to fly military aircraft wherever the want and not respect borders…

Tell that to civilian flight KAL 007 and the unarmed us T-39.

That was at the height of the Cold War with all fingers on the buttons…

Now you think sovereign nations that happen to be members of NATO are chomping at the bit because they think foreign, potentially enemy war planes are entering their airspace - not identification zones, actual airspace.

I highly doubt your be okay with Russian, Chinese, Iranian, planes (or reconnaissance balloons) entering US airspace…

No need for WWIII - just respect for border and strength in response. Russia has already shown that shooting down civilian airliners is okay if they enter their airspace…
