Americans can’t buy homes, get jobs or move in this stuck economy
Washington Post via MSN ^ | Sep 21, 2025 | Abha Bhattarai

A mix of high borrowing costs, dwindling job openings and growing economic and political uncertainty have left many U.S. households at a standstill, with many Americans saying they feel unable to buy new homes, take new jobs or move to new cities.

The Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut last week — the first of the year, with the expectation that more will follow — may have boosted stock prices, but it isn’t likely to make much of a difference to everyday Americans, economists say. While the economy is generally in good shape, many people feel stuck.

“Consumers have been increasingly paralyzed by economic uncertainty, tariffs, rising inflation, chances of a recession — and a quarter-point change in the Federal Funds Rate rates isn’t going to solve those problems,” said Jessica Riedl, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank. “There are much larger headwinds holding back the economy that must be addressed first.”

Monthly home sales have recently bottomed out, reaching lows last seen after the Great Recession in the early 2000s. Americans aren’t leaving their jobs or getting new ones. Hiring has stalled considerably this year, with employers adding 88,000 jobs in the past three months, roughly one-third of last summer’s count. And Census data shows that Americans are generally moving less — to new homes or cities — than they have in decades.

For the Americans who have locked in low mortgage rates and are happy in their jobs, economic inertia may not be a problem. But for many others — including recent graduates and the unemployed — the lack of opportunities is making it difficult to find a foothold in this economy.

I live in a mostly blue collar neighborhood on Aug 30 a home was listed for $820K, it sold on Sept 3 for more than the asking price (I talked to the owner yesterday).

Is the Washington Post not bringing heat to the President for his efforts to replace Fed Governors with folks who just might more aggressively lower interest rates? Hello?

That’s the median price of a home where I live. I chose to live the apartment lifestyle until something breaks. In the meantime, I am putting away every penny I can.

LOL, the 100 year old house a few over from me sold in April for $230, it needed a lot of work. Upstairs was unfinished, same with the living room. However it has about 150’ of waterfront with 2 boatwells.

Most of the folks this article speaks of suffer from self inflicted damage to their ability to get jobs ,buy a house or move . Set your self up for failure, turns out you might fail. There are jobs… but “recent grads” have a specific set of acceptable jobs theyre open to based on whatever useless degree they went into debt for. And the unemployed often find living off the taxpayer okay. Millions and millions of able bodied Americans sitting around collecting checks in nothing new.

Tariffs have nothing to do with this problem. Nice try, fail.

The Washington Post is a liar. I live in an area loaded with tons of different minorities and illegal aliens. They don’t seem to be having problems getting money from somewhere. They all drive brand new $75,000 to $100, 000 monster trucks or SUVs. I don’t have a clue who’s paying for them or those driving them who can’t afford to get a Voter I.D. are getting the driver’s licenses. They all eat out all the time. The restaurants are always full. You want to eat out? Be prepared to stand in line for an hour or so. They are shopping the hell out of all of the retail joints. They all wear new expensive clothes. Everyone wears Nikes. I never lived anywhere before where everyone drives Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars, Maseratis, Cadillacs, Corvettes, RAM trucks, Ford Expeditions, and every other expensive car they can find. The WAPO is FOS. They need to get out of their offices once in a while. We’ve got four expensive coffee joints on every block. Most of the residents here spend their “morning drives” to work waiting in the drives through. I’m sorry but the WAPO is good for nothing other than to put it down on the floor for the dogs to pee on. Their reporters are all commie jackasses.

Well things are not getting better as I had hoped Trump would have focused more on improving the economy and less on foreign policy as those idiots will do whatever they please...It is not going to fair well for the GOP come mid terms I suspect. Prices are still inflated and in fact going up, fuel is going back up, overall Americans are still in a bind. Never saw that 5000 from those DOGE cuts nor anything from those tariffs...Yet again the American taxpayer gets the short end of the stick.

We always know when new foreign colonists show up in town. They are panhandling at the intersections and Walmart parking lots. I saw a new family wearing muslim clothing sitting on the grass at the entrance to Walmart not long ago. They were all smiling and waving. The next day they were back. Sitting next to a massive new van with paper license plates they had parked in the shade. Waving and laughing. They hit the jackpot. I have to wonder how they got driver’s licenses. Where did they get the money for the brand new top of the line van?

Most people spend every penny they make and wonder why they cannot buy a home.

The number of Federal government employee and federal contractors who were furloughed or accepted early retirement packages have resulted in a GLUT of inventory in the Washington, DC Region.

This causes gridlock for people who have opportunities in other cities. IMO, this is to whom the POST is referring.
