Sen. Ted Cruz criticizes Trump-appointed FCC chair for urging "action" on Jimmy Kimmel

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas sharply criticized the head of the Federal Communications Commission for urging ABC to crack down on the now-benched late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, calling the Trump appointee's comments "dangerous as hell" and comparing his move to a mafia shakedown.

ABC, owned by Disney, took "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" off the air indefinitely on Wednesday, two days after Kimmel faced criticism for his comments on conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination. Just hours before the company's decision, FCC Chair Brendan Carr had publicly urged ABC to "take action" in response to Kimmel's remarks, saying in an interview: "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."

On his podcast Friday, Cruz called Carr a "good guy" but skewered him for his outspoken intervention.

"I gotta say, that's right out of 'Goodfellas.' That's right out of a mafioso coming into a bar, going, 'nice bar you have here, it'd be a shame if something happened to it,'" the Texas senator said, mimicking a mob boss's accent.

Cruz had little sympathy for Kimmel, whom he called "profoundly unfunny" and "bitter and nasty." The senator also called the comedian's disappearance from the airwaves a "fantastic thing" and argued his show was preempted because he "flat-out lied" about Kirk's killing.

But the senator warned that the FCC chair's approach could set a risky precedent.

"If the government gets in the business of saying, … 'we're going to ban you from the airwaves if you don't say what we like,' that will end up bad for conservatives," Cruz said.

"Let me tell you what will happen: Going down this road, there will come a time when a Democrat wins again, wins the White House," he added. "They will silence us, they will use this power, and they will use it ruthlessly….

Ted Cruz is the new idol of the network news. He’s their McCain. He’s such a rino turncoat. Conservative women adore him. That sickens me.

They already have.

Kimmel would have been canceled soon anyway - his ratings were in the toilet and the affiliate stations despised him.

Then they aren’t conservative women.

Like the Ice Storm, or when Trump accepted the nomination, or now.... Cruz always knows just the right way to screw up an inflection point moment.

I’d like him on the Supreme Court, but man, his crisis thinking is really wrong.

Is there a rule somewhere that says conservatives must be gentlemen and not fight back using the same tactics the left uses against us?

Right. Even though there was no direct government involvement (just comments, not orders), it's better if the government isn't involved.

The dems perfected cancel culture, and we haven't been that good at it.

We need our own cancel culture to take care of things like this.

If Cruz acts like this in the Senate, it’s likely he’d be like John Roberts if in the Supreme Court.

Democrats will do it anyways. Do it to them in hopes that when they power they realize that the Republicans will give as good as they get. That MIGHT deter them but doing nothing after what the Democrats just did for 4 years is not a winning strategy.

Honestly, it could be one heck of a court challenge. If he had said nothing it would have been completely organic and that’s what you want. Sometimes it is better to say nothing

“Conservatives” are there to offer the illusion of resistance to liberals.

Ted’s had a fall and hit his head. He acts like we are in a parking lot brawl fist/fight with the left. We are engagedd in ALL OUT PRE CIVIL WAR with the lunatic LEFT! Risks must be taken, these 5 Networks hire VERY, VERY Few conservatives and Kimmel doesn’t hire any. The air waves belong to the American People. At a minimum, both sides ought to always have a seat at the table.

I thought conservatives were against big government intrusion and coercion?

The best way to fight back is to collectively boycott the show and urge like minded folks to do the same and let it die the same way Stephen Colbert’s show died. It was going to happen eventually anyway.

I like a lot of things about you, Ted Cruz, but maybe just find another topic to pontificate about for now.
Trump knows what he’s doing.

“Then they aren’t conservative women.”

They are military wives. And religious. That reputation gives them the conservative title along with their husbands and they calling themselves conservatives

When I talk about them to bewildered young adults, I say well, they are liberal they just won’t admit it.

So ya

In my NY family and among these women I see that they were raised by democrats and they never let go of it. I find it sick

Cruz is as usual correct.

I’m glad he is my senator.

Cornyn is pathetic.
