The writer-director opened up about how his career has changed after he was accused of sexually abusing his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.
Woody Allen reflected on how his career changed after allegations circulated that he sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, while sharing his thoughts on cancel culture in a new interview.
While speaking to The Wall Street Journal earlier this week, Allen again addressed the sexual abuse claims, maintaining his innocence, and spoke about the fallout from the controversy he faced, which has included a number of stars declaring they no longer want to work with him.
And he called cancel culture, “just dumb.”
Allen has adamantly denied the accusations that he molested Dylan when she was 7 years old. He previously reacted to the claims in his 2020 memoir Apropos of Nothing, alleging that Dylan grew convinced she was molested after her mother Mia Farrow used to sing her a song called “Daddy in the Attic.”
However, Dylan stood by the allegations while issuing a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “I am sick and tired of the misogynistic and unscientific narrative that I was coached or brainwashed. Far from it, this is a truth I reported as a child and have continued to recount consistently since,” she said. “I am a 40-year-old woman. I was sexually assaulted by Woody Allen.”
While Allen has maintained his innocence, he acknowledged that many actors have not wanted to work with him in light of the allegations. “If an actor says, ‘I won’t work with him,’ basically, the actor is thinking, ‘I’m doing a good thing,’ from his point of view, ‘I’m making a contribution, I’m making a statement,'” he told The Wall Street Journal. “But he’s really making a mistake. Some day he may learn that.”
Michael Caine, Colin Firth and Greta Gerwig are among several of the actors who have said they would never work with Allen, while many have been open about regretting working with him in the past. Despite having his former collaborators turn their backs on him, Allen insisted he doesn’t get “angry.”
“I would think they would have more common sense, when they read about the situation. What surprises me, always, is how ready and willing people are to embrace it,” he said. “I would think someone reading the details would think, ‘That’s a little dicey looking to me.'”
Allen spoke about cancel culture one year after Mia admitted she was able to separate her experiences as a collaborator of Allen’s and the “trials and tribulations” that followed in their personal lives.
“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him. I’m not one who’d say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t,'” Mia, who worked on 13 films with Allen, added while appearing on CBS Sunday Morning in September 2024.
“Consequences Culture”
There’s a difference Woody. There were people who wouldn’t work with Chaplin or Polanski either, not because of politics but because of disgust.
What proof do you have that Woody did anything wrong?
He married his adopted daughter.
> And he called cancel culture, “just dumb.” <
Sort of like a bank robber complaining about people who are being falsely accused of bank robbery.
Mia is a psycho liberal woman. Her accusations should be taken with a grain of salt.
He did not adopt her, Mia did and Woody and Mia were never married.
The girl was never Woody’s adopted daughter.
Those are the facts.
His kids saw their father marry their sister. That’s all kinds of messed up, regardless of what Allen’s parental status was to Soon-Yi.
> He did not adopt her, Mia did… <
True that. But out of the many thousands of available women out there, Allen picked the one woman who would cause Mia huge mental anguish.
Not illegal, of course. But to me, it’s a sign of moral depravity. Woody Allen is trash.
(Your mileage may vary.)
These pretzels are salty
“These pretzels are salty”
good one.
You just showed me you didn’t even know he never adopted her and you presented it as if it were a fact. You didn’t even bother to see if it were true in all these years since the whole thing happened like 30 years ago.
You based your opinion on reports you got second hand from the newspapers who had an ax to grind favoring Mia Farrow the spurned woman.
These are not honest opinions and you being really an outsider in this case, as they would call you, ‘a nobody’ have got this opinion of a person who for all you know is being smeared because of a spurned and angry woman.
That couple has now been married what 30 years? You still think it’s he’s morally depraved. I don’t beieve in holding false witness to something I have not real factual knowledge of. Says he fell in love with the girl and is still married to her.
I will not be a dupe of the press and especially not for Mia Farrow who is out there beating the drum constantly against Allen. Too much vile and supposition, he was aquitted in court and personally I think the story is more than likely not true.
Soon-yi herself said, “Woody Allen “was never any kind of father figure [to her]” and that she “never had any dealings with him” during her childhood”.
To me to base an opinion on someone from gossip is morally depraved, which is how I see your opinion.
As close as I want to get to it, nothing. But starting a sexual relationship with someone that was treated like a family member (including nude photos of her) is creepy beyond words and calls into question his suitability as a parent.
It doesn’t matter.
You haven’t made a good movie in quite a while.
Soon enough, it will matter even less.
Where was his voice when only conservatives were bein cancelled?, I don’t remember him saying that then, Did I miss it? Yet another hypocrite. Ho hum. Yawn.
He is one creepy ass dude
> To me to base an opinion on someone from gossip is morally depraved, which is how I see your opinion. <
I see you have decided to stray from civil conversation, and make it personal. That’s a pity, as I often learn something from FReepers who have an opinion different than mine.
But as it is, I would prefer if you not contact me in the future.
You’re the one who stated a lie as a fact.
“He married his adopted daughter”.
I called you out on it and you don’t like it.
Woody Allen is still working? Who knew?
