Once idyllic college town facing collapse as almost 200 local businesses slam Democrat-run city's 'crime crisis'

Almost 200 local businesses in an idyllic college town have turned on its Democrat-run leadership as the city's 'crime crisis' threatens to destroy its once thriving tourism industry.

Downtown Burlington, Vermont, where the University of Vermont is located, is now a crime-infested cesspool blighted by substance abuse, mental health and homelessness, according to fed-up locals of the artsy enclave.

More than 170 businesses signed an open letter in May demanding the city intervene and do something to stop the violence, open drug trafficking and substance abuse directly impacting their revenue.

'We have reached a critical point where we must voice a serious alarm: our downtown is facing a crisis,' the open letter said.

The letter called on city officials to also address quality of life issues including unsafe parking garages, public drug use and needle removal, graffiti and overall safety.

Burlington Business Associationโ€™s Kelly Devine told WCAX Channel 3 that restaurant and alcohol revenues have dropped drastically as the level of crime and chaos have increased unabated.

Devine described the current city state as 'icky' and 'kind of scary'. Business owners advocated for efficient actions to condemn open drug use, shoplifting and graffiti.

Progressive mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak expressed that there is no quick solution to these deeply-rooted issues with bizarre woke claim that additional police presence would increase crime rates; instead calling for more state aid for mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Notice the Dems make excuses like little kids when the subject of cleaning up their mess comes up. It’s too hard. We can’t do it. It will take a long time. People will be sad.

If additional police presence would increase crime rates then the solution is to defund all the police and hire more social workers./s

Hmmm. Burlington Vermont... what did Burlington import that could cause an increase in “icky” crime.

I also spent my youth about 20 miles from Burlington. UVM was great in the late 70’s, but it was clear the election of Bernie would start the downhill spiral.

Vermont? Doubt it. It's just like Portland, Oregon.

I could be wrong though.

Burlington is the largest city in Vermont, but the population is just 44,000. It’s 81% white, 5, 5, 4, and 5 Asian, Black, Hispanic and Mixed.

So you can’t blame minorities or illegal aliens. It’s probably the best controlled experiment to show that the problem is “progressive” politics. You have to make a special effort to intentionally f’ things up, and it appears that the people who run Burlington are doing it.

'We have reached a critical point where we must voice a serious alarm: our downtown is facing a crisis,' the open letter said.

Generally, when the "Silent Majority" cry that we have reached a "critical point," the problem is already too far gone to solve.

Like a man jumping out of a 20-story building, and, when plummeting down past the 2nd story, yelling, "I've reached the critical point!"

Regards,

Didnโ€™t Vermont send the communist Bernie Sanders to represent them in the U. S. Senate for the past 18 years?

When homeless drug abusers reach critical mass, it’s almost always game over for any town of any size. Exactly this same thing has taken place in Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island, as well as in the capital city of Victoria. These cities are not huge either, and have very uber-liberal politics.

If the local government and cops can keep the situations below critical mass, the rot only spreads in gradually; if they try to legislate woke political solutions, then the rot explodes fast. It is so obvious only idiots could fail to notice it. That proves that 60 to 70 per cent of people in certain states and provinces are idiots. They have no clue how to deal with these issues and think legalizing drug injection sites will make it go away. Of course that just attracts more losers to town.

It says businesses are complaining because its cutting into their revenue but why aren’t everyday residents complain about the effect on their lives?

The mayor is right, if you don’t arrest people, the crime rate is zero. As soon as you arrest one person, it’s gone up.
Must maintain those great numbers.

but it was clear the election of Bernie would start the downhill spiral.

In 1962, Philip Hoff was elected Vermont's first Democrat governor since the Civil War.
