~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

KSftleavenworth1

Fort Leavenworth is a United States Army installation located in Leavenworth County, Kansas, in the city of Leavenworth, roughly 20 miles northwest of Kansas City. Built in 1827, it is the second oldest active United States Army post west of Washington, D.C., and the oldest permanent settlement in Kansas. Fort Leavenworth has been historically known as the "Intellectual Center of the Army."

Today, the garrison supports the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) by managing and maintaining the home of the US Army Combined Arms Center (CAC). CAC's mission involves leader development, collective training, and Army doctrine and battle command (current and future).

Fort Leavenworth is home to the Military Corrections Complex, consisting of the United States Disciplinary Barracks – the Department of Defense's only maximum security prison – and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility.

In addition, the Fort Leavenworth Garrison supports numerous tenant organizations that directly and indirectly relate to the functions of the CAC, including the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Foreign Military Studies Office.

Fort Leavenworth was also the base of African-American soldiers of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on 21 September 1866 at Fort Leavenworth. They became known as Buffalo Soldiers, nicknamed by the Native American tribes whom they fought. The term eventually was applied to all of the African-American regiments formed in 1866.

The Command and General Staff College confers a Master of Military Art and Science professional degree to graduates of the School of Advanced Military Studies as well as graduates of the Command and General Staff School who complete a thesis-level research paper. The degree is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission for collegiate institutions in the Midwestern United States.

Military art and science is an interdisciplinary field of study. It encompasses many academic disciplines insofar as they relate to war, peace, and the employment of military forces; they include established academic fields of study such as sociology, history, engineering, psychology, politics, geography, science, ethics, economics, anthropology, and others.

It may also include other professional fields of practice such as medicine and the law insofar as they interact with the military or are applied to military matters. It provides intellectual and theoretical depth to the military profession and its practitioners.

My great grandfather was in a cavalry troop during the Civil War that was led by a drunken officer. With hostile Indians in the vicinity, the troop was afraid they would be massacred and talked great grandfather, a lawyer, into going to Ft Leavenworth and trying to get the officer cashiered. They locked the officer up and ggfather headed out. Someone let the officer out and there was a race. From the military returns, ggfather spent a short time in the jail there while the higher ups worked out the situation. It didn’t affect his career, but I was always amused by the story.

“Jerry, I was with the Cav from nov 67 to nov 68 w A company, 227 assault helicopter battalion. As a helicopter pilot we supported you in the field many times. WELCOME HOME brother. your interview was the one that hit closer to home for me than any other I have watched. thank you.”

“I’m a Nam combat wounded veteran who has experiences that I will not share at this time. Jerry’s eloquent interview moved me through many emotions and some tears at times…. Especially about his father. Watching this video allowed me some healing and I appreciate it. I wish every high schooler could watch it.”

“I’m a Iraq Afghanistan vet and this was something I needed to hear today, God bless you Jerry.”

Good evening radu!

*HUGS*

Big work weekend this last weekend, I’m a bit ragged. Yesterday was a 16 hour day outside, kicked my butt. Glad that one is only once a year for one day.

It’s all good!

Hope you have a wonderful week.
