Two Cornell students killed bear and skinned it back at their dorm

A pair of Cornell University students killed a 120-pound black bear before bringing the carcass back to their dorm, where they skinned and butchered the remains, officials said Thursday.

The two undergrads who had “valid New York State hunting licenses killed a bear lawfully over the weekend,” a Cornell spokesperson said in a statement.

The students then “brought the animal into a Cornell residence hall for processing on Saturday” before a “police report was made when a complaint was filed late Sunday night,” the school official said, adding that “no charges have been filed.”

An investigator with the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which oversees hunting in New York state, visited the school on Sunday and found no code violations.

The bear was killed in the DEC’s Region 4, which includes Delaware, Otsego, Albany, Columbia, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Schoharie and Schenectady counties, according to the agency.

That means the bear wasn’t killed in Tompkins County, which includes Cornell University and the city of Ithaca. Ostego, three counties away to the east, would appear to be the area of Region 4 closest to Cornell.

The state agency confirmed school findings that “the incident does not present violations of the Environmental Conservation Law or DEC regulations.”

Cornell’s intercollegiate teams compete as the Big Red but have no official mascot.

However, fans have long embraced images of a bear, and a person wearing a bear suit decked out in Cornell gear is a regular sight prowling sidelines at Big Red football and basketball games.

A growling bear plays a star role in Cornell’s athletic imagery, and bears are all over school memorabilia.

“...killed the bear lawfully...” There’s the problem. If it is lawful, you can’t do it. It must be illegal before it’s okay with the braindead “judiciary” in this country to do it.

And?

Some snowflakes couldn’t handle that other students might enjoy hunting. What’s sad is, I expect that the local cops and school administrators are working overtime to find something to charge them with.

Hunters were smart enough to know what they could do and where.

Guess they’re will be some new campus rules in the pipeline.

Leftists just ASSUME anything they don’t like is against the law. And thus it is unjust if the LEO slaves, erhh, police, don’t follow throw and arrest the Bad People who are offending them. How dare they flout the will of the Self-Anointed!

Way back when, there were some guys in my dorm that used to ge squirrels for dinner and prep them in their rooms. It was more a function of being a broke college student than any kind of statement.

As long as they cleaned up any mess I fail to see the problem. This assumes the hunt was legal.

It might be more about the bear being associated with Cornell as a sort of unofficial mascot. Still I don’t see a problem.

Well, if it WAS the mascot, then we might have issues...

Well, I’ve attended numerous colleges, state and private, and have several degrees. I’ve seen tons of rules. Hair length rules. Akihol rules. Dating rules. But I never saw any rule that said a student could not skin and butcher a game animal in their dorm room.

And what's the point? My first week at flight school found me in a dorm complex where several sheep were being slaughtered for a holiday. We all had a very nice time. I learned about the best spices and best cuts.

I don't much care for bear or Moose. I find they have similarities in taste.

“Some snowflakes couldn’t handle that other students might enjoy hunting.”

More like some didn’t think a dorm room was the proper place to dress out the car us.

Would you do that in your bedroom.

I don’t think so!

Does the school handbook prohibit processing game in your dorm room? If not, what is the big deal? People do weirder s**t in dorms.

Yeah, I know for a fact that in the early 70’s there was a chit-load of pheasants processed in dorms at the U of Iowa.

I didn’t mind them killing, cooking, and eating squirrels in their dorm rooms. I minded that they were using air rifles to poach the friendly, half-tame squirrels on the quad. At least go out of town and hunt *wild* squirrels, will ya?
