Modi and Trump signal mutual optimism for US-India trade negotiations moving ahead

In a post on X early Wednesday, Modi said both countries are working to settle trade discussions "at the earliest." He added that he was looking forward to talks with President Donald Trump.

"We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people," Modi wrote.

Trump made a similar post earlier in the day praising Modi as a "very good friend" and confirming that the two countries were in negotiations. He added that he expected a favorable outcome in the upcoming weeks.

The talks mark a significant shift after months of heightened trade tensions, with both countries imposing tariffs and counter-tariffs.

Washington is pressing New Delhi to ease prices on U.S. dairy and farm goods, something that India resists to protect its large population of small farmers.

...

Trump has asked India to reduce reliance on Russian oil and increase its purchases of American liquefied natural gas and crude, but India argues energy diversification is a must to keep prices stable.

In technology, American firms are pushing for greater market access, stronger intellectual property protections, and fewer data localization rules, which India defends as necessary for national security and supporting its own startups.

That’s the first thought I had a well. Modi seems like a weird bad dude to me but I honestly don’t know to much about him.

At the root of the issue is Modi.

I believe that Modi is a good guy who wants to bring India into the world. He can’t however, because his very strong opposition insists on maintaining the 1960 status quo. Being part of the world is disallowed.

Modi knows that Russia isn’t. An India armed with Russian weapons shown to be at best no good is in bad shape in a war with a Pakistan armed with American weapons. The American Cice President has a wife with Indian heritage. There are tons of Indians in America.

America buys lots of Indian exports. Russia buys nothing and even if it wants to is broke and has no money.

The old order in India must be trashed. Modi has a job on his hands

Too many minorities there. Sikhs want their own country.

They will go nowhere if Trump keeps trying to dictate who India can trade with.

“I believe that Modi is a good guy who wants to bring India into the world. He can’t however, because his very strong opposition insists on maintaining the 1960 status quo.”

Domestic politics in India. The Left there is widespread, with Communist Parties (they have more than one) sometimes running State Governments. They have a particular ideological chip on their shoulder over Western Imperialism/Colonialism/cultural dominance, only getting their independence from the UK in 1947.

It offended national pride to be told what to do by a Western Country, and Pro-Russian politicians and media in India played that up. Modi, an economist by trade, who has moved India very successfully toward free market policies, had to manage that butt hurt among the public.

Once India was formally notified of the new tariffs, there began a normal delay period of about three weeks, before they begin being collected (to allow goods already in transit to arrive). Public announcement was on 7 August, but formal notification of them being placed into effect occurred on 27 August. Actual collection of those new duties will begin next week, unless the President suspends them.

India may have just been getting their last few discounted tankerloads, while letting things blow over in the domestic news cycle.
