Analysis - The optics could not have been more stark as Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived at a massive military parade in Beijing flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - with some two dozen other leaders including from Iran, Pakistan, Belarus and Myanmar trailing behind.
Jumbotrons at Tiananmen Square beamed the image to the 50,000 people gathered under the beating Beijing sun to witness the spectacle, many waving small Chinese flags, while state media transmitted it to televisions across China and the world.
Many watching in capitals across the West, including Donald Trump, thought the messaging was clear: China is deliberately provoking the US and its partners.
"Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against The United States of America," the US president wrote to Xi on social media as legions of troops goose-stepped their way through central Beijing.
For anyone who heard the echoing shouts of the thousands of well-drilled troops and saw the hulking nuclear-capable missiles, underwater drones and warplanes gliding down Beijing's Avenue of Eternal Peace, there's no question that Xi was orchestrating his most forceful showing yet of China as an alternative global leader - with both military might and geopolitical heft.

Sure, give Xi Taiwan and give Putin Ukraine and there will be no war.
Go away China you smell like pickled cabbage
Can you give China Taiwan? In their entire history they have never been able to project their power outside their own borders.
If China were to attack Taiwan all you would need to do is have an international boycott of them and it would ruin them.
It’s absurd to conflate the two.
In one we have essential American interests.
In the other, jack sh!t.
You Chi-coms have been at war with the U.S. for decades asshat.
I wonder how much of the Chinese weaponry is for real and how much represents cardboard and plastic models, sort of like science fiction movie sets.
"I'll choose lasagna."
China is a rogue totalitarian nation the has killed millions of its own citizens.
China is not to be trusted and nations should arm themselves accordingly against China which is a paper-tiger but still dangerous.
Like most tyrants, the Chicoms desire peace, only they spell it differently.
They desire piece; this piece, that piece. Oh! There is another piece over there.
Reminds me of the Brezhnev Doctrine:
What’s ours is ours; what yours is negotiable.
"Yes, yes. I remember."
I should have pinged you.
And let Xi genocide the Uighers in peace. Every dictator needs a hobby.
I hear if you feed your neighbors to a crocodile, he might even eat you last! Oh, joy!
I really believe that the deal was for all First World countries to fall in line and turn themselves over to be governed by The Chinese and the world’s “owners” and live as serfs. I also think that if we don’t acquiesce there may be global conflict. That is what China is talking about here and that is also the reason most of our political establishment is opposing Trump because he offers resistance to this plan.
Xi’s definition of “peace” is the same as the Islamist definition of “peace:” submit to us, and you will have peace.
They sound like blacks, any criticism is racism or something.
They sound like a lot of women, give them what they want and they will be peaceful.
They do a hell of a lot of projection accusing everyone of doing what they have already done and would gladly do again.
In other words Xi is saying; give it all over to China or they’ll take it by military force. Thus, peace or war.
It’s the other way around. Taiwan owns China.
The “real” Chinese (led by Chiang Kai-shek) were forced to flee the mainland to Taiwan in 1949 when Joseph Stalin sent weapons and helped the smelly-ass communist peasant Mao Zedong take over.
Without interference by the Soviet Union, China would have had a Republican form of government (like what they now have currently in Taiwan).
