Sir Keir Starmer will encourage Shabana Mahmood to run for election as his deputy within Labour to see off Left-wing candidates, party insiders suggest.
The new Home Secretary, who is a devout Muslim, is seen by many Starmer loyalists as the perfect choice to replace Angela Rayner and to get ahead of challenger running on a pro-Palestinian platform.
The Prime Minister will almost certainly face a challenge to his authority from the Left of the Labour Party when nominations open for the deputy leadership.
Left-wing MPs are expected to rally around a candidate who will urge Sir Keir to get tougher on Israel.
Rosena Allin-Khan, who has repeatedly challenged the Government’s stance on Gaza from the Labour benches in Parliament, is said to be keen to stand again for the deputy leadership, having come second to Ms Rayner in 2020.
Dame Emily Thornberry, who was snubbed for a Cabinet post by Sir Keir when he became Prime Minister, and former transport secretary Louise Haigh are seen as strong contenders from the Left.
The role of deputy party leader differs from that of the deputy prime minister, from which Ms Rayner also resigned. Sir Keir appointed David Lammy to that role on Friday.
Because Labour’s deputy leaders are directly elected by the party’s members, Sir Keir has no control over who becomes his No 2 in the party, which is why the Left sees Ms Rayner’s departure as a perfect opportunity to pressure Sir Keir for a change of direction. Any candidate endorsed by Sir Keir is likely to be a woman, as there is an acceptance that replacing Ms Rayner with a man would be politically damaging.
The ideal candidate would also be from outside London to counterbalance Sir Keir’s north London sensibilities, as well as being a dependable loyalist.

By golly, you’re right.
I guess it’s a side point, but most of my older relatives immigrated from Hungary. And they all quickly took on Americanized names. For example, my great uncle Béla became Bill.
So what’s with this Shabana thing?
Could it be that my relatives wanted to assimilate, but Shabana does not?
Shabana Mahmood sounds like a true English rose.
She wants every Mike and Tommy in Britain to changes their names to Muhammad and Abdul. She will not change.
