Pope Leo XIV met Sept. 4 with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, calling for swift action to end hostilities in Gaza and ensure urgent humanitarian access to the most afflicted areas.
According to the Holy See Press Office, the meeting — held at the Vatican Apostolic Palace — addressed escalating tensions in the Middle East and reinforced the Vatican’s long-standing support for peace built on justice and dialogue.
The statement described the discussions as “cordial” and noted they focused on the broader political and social instability across the region, “with particular attention to the tragic situation in Gaza.”
The Holy See emphasized the urgency of resolving the humanitarian crisis through concrete steps.
“The hope was expressed for a prompt resumption of negotiations,” the statement said, “in order that, with willingness and courageous decisions, as well as the support of the international community, the freeing of the hostages may be achieved, a permanent ceasefire be reached urgently, the safe entry of humanitarian aid in the most affected areas be facilitated, and full respect for humanitarian law be guaranteed.”
The Holy See reaffirmed its view that “the two-state solution [is] the only way out of the ongoing war,” while addressing the future of the Palestinian people, the situation in the West Bank, and the sensitive status of Jerusalem.
Attention was also given to the role of Christian communities throughout the region. The discussions acknowledged their significant contribution “to human and social development, especially in the spheres of education, the promotion of social cohesion and stability in the region.”
Following the audience with the Holy Father, Herzog also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, along with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
Pope Leo should be leading the crusade. Not caviling for the enemy.
Pretty sad when the pope is unable to appreciate the facts on the ground and chooses to embrace fables. It takes to to tango & Gaza elected not to have a state. They firmly want one state & it isn’t Israel.
Hard to respect one who embraces platitudes which misstate facts. Fact is Israel has sent a tremendous amount of aid before Oct 7th and during the conflict despite the savagery shown to Israelis and others. No other Nation has ever acted in a similar fashion.
The reply should be: “Ok. After we cut the Hamas “CANCER” out of Gaza.”
As part of the meeting, the Pope presented Bibi with a golden, ornate, phone. “It’s a direct line to God,” said the Pope. “Please call Him, but make it brief. It’s an expensive connection.”
Bibi did and had a nice, but brief, chat.
Bibi then presented the Pope with a battered AT&T phone, black, with a rotary dial. “We, too, have a direct line to HaShem. Please call, but you can take as long as you want.”
The Pope picked up the phone, “As long as I want?”
“Yeah,” replied Bibi. “It’s a local call from here.”
Hamas needs utter defeat
So, does this meeting between the pope and the titular head of the State of Israel mean that the Vatican recognizes Israel as theJewish state? Previous popes, even including John Paul II, have studiously avoided, recognizing Israel. But when you meet with the head of state of a nation, that pretty strongly implies that you recognize the nation which that head of state represents.
Oh, and a little bit more directly on topic, I wish like others that the Pope would stop believing in the fable of a “Palestinian” state. The Arabs who call themselves “Palestinians” have had numerous opportunities over the last 78 years to have an independent state, and have absolutely refused to accept that very generous offer from the Israelis, simply because they refuse to acknowledge the right of Israel to even exist. I think that any sensible statesman (and the Pope is a statesman in addition to being a religious leader) would have to take the stance that until both parties to a disagreement recognize that the other party has certain base level rights, dealing with the party that refuses to recognize the other’s rights is a lost cause.
Of all people, the pope should know what happened the last time the muslims invaded Europe.
The only other explanation is that this is all just putting the pieces in place for the second coming. After all, the antichrist can’t take control in a functioning world with faithful, happy and content people.
And yet he has NOTHING to say about Christians being genocided in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.
Or is this all just more blowing Catholic smoke?
The pope. What a waste of space and oxygen.
He is just “a man”. No holier than you or me. In fact less, because they are all hypocrites.
SELL all the gold, buildings, and land. Then feed the poor, the hungry, the sick, and then get back to me when you are broke and humble.
“Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Perhaps you should make yourself better informed before you lash out in ignorance:

Pope Leo is wasting his breath on Israel. Israel is spending zillions trucking (and even air dropping) tons and tons and TONS of free food and provisions into the Occupation Population in the gaza district. Zillions of free food boxes on thousands and thousands of trucks. NEVER BEFORE IN WORLD HISTORY HAS A NATION PROVIDED FREE FOOD AND SUPPLIES AND PROVISIONS TO A HOSTILE POPULATION THAT ATTACKED IT, NOTHING LIKE IT HAS EVER BEEN DONE ANYWHERE IN ALL OF WORLD HISTORY.
AND in recent weeks, USA has joined the Free Food Giveaway operation (with a few very minor contributions from a handful of other countries).
Pope Leo is preaching to the choir.
Then when all the money is gone feeding the poor, you have to improved the situation. The poor are there because of their governments, and not the Vatican. Why don’t you rail against the billionaires?
