South Africa's firebrand MP Julius "Kill the Boer" Malema found guilty of hate speech

South African opposition politician Julius Malema has been convicted of hate speech by the country's equality court, following remarks he made at a rally in 2022.

Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party, often sparks controversy in a nation where, 31 years after apartheid ended, racial tensions still linger.

After an incident where a white man allegedly assaulted an EFF member, Malema said: "No white man is going to beat me up... you must never be scared to kill. A revolution demands that at some point there must be killing."

The equality court ruled that these remarks "demonstrated an intent to incite harm", but the EFF said they were taken out of context.

Two complaints had been made against the 44-year-old MP - one by South Africa's Human Rights Commission and another by a person who alleged they had been threatened because of the politician's remarks.

In its ruling, the court said: "Whilst calling out someone who behaves as a racist may be acceptable, calling for them to be killed is not.

"And calling for someone to be killed because they are a racist who has acted violently, is an act of vigilantism and an incitement of the most extreme form of harm possible."

In a subsequent statement, the EFF said the ruling "is fundamentally flawed and deliberately misreads both the context and the meaning of the speech".

"It assumes that the reasonable listener is incapable of understanding metaphor, revolutionary rhetoric or the history of liberation struggles," the EFF added.

In June, Malema, whose party came fourth in last year's parliamentary election, was denied entry to the UK.

The Home Office said he had been deemed "non-conducive to the public good".

Malema was also criticised by US President Donald Trump in a confrontational meeting with South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa in May.

Trump played a video of the EFF leader singing an anti-apartheid song which refers to white farmers.

Malema often chants the song - which includes the lyrics "kill the Boer (Afrikaner); kill the farmer" - at his political rallies.

Afrikaner lobby groups have tried to get the song banned, but South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled that a "reasonably well-informed person" would understand that when "protest songs are sung, even by politicians, the words are not meant to be understood literally, nor is the gesture of shooting to be understood as a call to arms or violence".

RE: What did he say that was so racist and hateful?

Let’s turn the question around...

If someone held a huge rally of 100,000 whites in one of America’s stadiums and asked everyone to chant “KILL ALL N**GERS”, what is so racist and hateful about that?

Exactly! Many if not most South African blacks have been permitted to state their hate of all whites for decades.
It is a big shock when they are called out, and penalized for it. For generations, they considered a loud and blustery racial hatred to be their right.

ASimilar to many American blacks who used to say “Blacks cannot accurately be called racist, because to be racist implies someone who holds power and influence. And of course, all blacks are still poor and without societal influence or power!”
That is for the most part, no longer true.

“Kill the Boer”?

Pretty much racist and hateful, and they are actually doing it.

To say one group or another can't be racist is , in itself a racist statement.

It implies a moral and ethical superiority in one race over another where none exists.

No punishment orders have been made yet, but Malema could face an order to apologise publicly, be forced to pay compensation or be recommended for criminal prosecution.

I've seen videos of his rallies. They regularly attract 100,000 or more. I've been to South Africa several times...both before and after Mandela. I once dated a South African woman. There's not a hint of doubt in my mind that the people of South Africa...white *and* black...will soon come to envy the people of Zimbabwe...Burkina Faso...etc.

What did he say that was so racist and hateful?

Incitement of murder

Afterwards, Malema criticised his colleagues for not retaliating more forcefully. He urged them to “follow up” with one white man seen in the footage so that the man could be “attended to properly”.

Malema went on to say that “revolutionaries must not be scared to kill,” and that racist acts should be interpreted as “an application to meet your maker with immediate effect”.

“No white man is going to beat me up… Revolution demands that at some point there must be killing,” he said.

South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled that a “reasonably well-informed person””the words(Shoot to kill! Kill the Boer! The Farmer! screamed in unison by 100,000 blacks in a giant stadium) are not meant to be understood literally, nor is the gesture of shooting to be understood as a call to arms or violence”.

Absurd cowardly denial! But then, our Corrupt Leftist News Media censored the video of this giant hate rally that Trump showed at his meting with SA President Ramaphosa so their corruption is as deep as the SA court.

I missed the part of the story where he was expelled from Parliament, imprisoned, fined, or suffered any penalty whatsoever.

Well I guess it is still a step up, for the court to not officially endorse his calls for murder and genocide, and then join the chorus on the Kill the Farmer song again.

Malema can get a job at any American university or mosque and make a fortune. He sounds just like any commentator on MSNBC or faculty lounge at Harvard.

Every white person needs to leave that place and let the blacks live by their own devices. If they don’t leave, they are being genocide.

revolutionary rhetoric or the history of liberation struggles,

Oh, we understand that history all too well. We call it "genocide".

the words are not meant to be understood literally

Wrong. They are absolutely literal, as the bloody history of racist, socialist, and communist revolution around the world demonstrates. From the blood-soaked guillotine of the French Revolution all the way to the mohammedan uprising against Jews in Israel and the blacks with their "necklaces" and machetes in South Africa today, revolutionary movements that talk or sing about mass murder are not engaged in mere hyperbole. They're honestly telling the world what they plan to do.
