Starmer admits he’s frustrated by first year in power

Sir Keir Starmer admitted he was “frustrated” by his first year in power as he carried out a reshuffle of his top team in No 10.

The Prime Minister accepted voters had a right to be angry with the Labour Government almost 14 months after he entered Downing Street. On Monday, Sir Keir hired a string of experienced economists for senior No 10 positions in a move he said marked the beginning of “phase two” of his premiership. It also threatens to undermine Rachel Reeves ahead of a challenging autumn Budget at which she is expected to have to announce major tax rises.

Darren Jones, the former chief secretary to the Treasury, moved into the new role of Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister with an emphasis on delivering three priorities: the NHS, living standards and controlling immigration. Baroness Shafik, a former Bank of England official described by No 10 as a “world-leading economist”, and Dan York Smith, who has spent two decades at the Treasury, were also given senior roles.

Tim Allan, a former media aide to Sir Tony Blair, was also brought back into the fold as executive director of communications.

During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live’s Matt Chorley, Sir Keir was asked whether his changes were in response to voters’ frustration with the government as Labour continues to struggle in the polls.

He replied: “I get that frustration because after 14 years of the last government, people voted for change and they want change.

“The reason I said a year or so again it will take time is that I wanted to level with the public that after 14 years of failure, public services, the economy, you name it, it was going to take time to turn it around.”

No mention of who Starmer appointed to shoot English protestors if they get too rowdy.

But maybe that’s a state secret.

Starmer is frustrated, but not nearly as frustated as the people of England.

Once leaders understand that they are not “in power”, but rather “in service”, things will go much better for them.
