In June, I reported that Chengxuan Han, a Chinese national and Ph.D. student at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan, was charged with smuggling biological material into the United States and making false statements to federal authorities. Han was apprehended upon arrival at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa after a flight from China. Han has now pleaded no contest to the charges.

On June 8, 2025, Han arrived at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa. Customs and Border Protection officers conducted an inspection of Han, during which Han made false statements about the packages and the biological materials she had previously shipped to the United States. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Michigan, investigators found evidence of her deleting data from her devices days prior to travel, and she admitted to sending the packages and to making false statements to officers.

Legal Insurrection readers may recall that around the same time as Han’s arrest, Chinese national and U of M scholar Yunqing Jian was also arrested on charges related to the attempted smuggling of a hazardous biological pathogen into the United States. Jian, 33, and her boyfriend Zunyong Liu, 34, are accused of conspiring to bring the fungus Fusarium graminearum (classified in scientific literature as a potential agroterrorism weapon) into the country supposedly for research purposes.***

Noose or firing squad?
Chinese espionage in the US is extensive, encompassing intellectual property theft, cyber intrusions, and efforts to influence policy and public opinion, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray.
The scope of this activity surpasses that of all other countries combined, posing a “grave threat” to U.S. economic and national security. China employs diverse tactics, including virtual spying on service members via social media, operating undeclared “police stations,” and even attempting sabotage of critical infrastructure, notes the House Homeland Committee and the RAND Corporation.
Unprecedented Scale:
FBI Director Christopher Wray has stated that the scale of China’s spying efforts is larger than that of any other country, including the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Broad Targeting:
China targets various sectors, including businesses, universities, researchers, lawmakers, and the general public.
Intellectual Property Theft:
China actively steals intellectual property to advance its own military and economic development, with a cost estimated to be as high as $6,000 for an average American family.
Cyber Espionage:
China’s hacking capabilities have evolved from stealing secrets to potentially disrupting critical infrastructure like ports and power grids, according to the RAND Corporation.
Virtual Espionage:
China uses platforms like LinkedIn to find and target U.S. military members and other individuals with security clearances for intelligence gathering, the YouTube channel of the House.gov reports.
“Police Stations” and Repression:
China operates undeclared overseas police stations on U.S. soil to monitor and pressure Chinese nationals, which the House Committee on Homeland Security has investigated.
Influence Operations:
The Chinese government attempts to influence U.S. lawmakers and public opinion to advance policies favorable to China.
Importing bio weapons, eh ?
Feed her to a gator.
Locally, we had a prime example of the industrial espionage.
A Chinese female PhD chemist was hired by a large local chemical company. The company has sales literally all around the world and especially to China.
Some months after she quit her job locally, she was arrested at her new job at a smaller specialty chemical company in Michigan. She was arrested on federal charges of industrial espionage while here.
Pretty mundane stuff but worthy of a PhD’s efforts to come to America to steal
Her reason for getting a job here was to learn all about making a specialty chemical used to provide a coating to the insides of food cans.
Thx for the inside story.
I’m guessing that China has perfectly fine schools so the only reason they would come here is to spy on America.

“Chinese Ph.D. Student Pleads No Contest to Smuggling Biological Materials into U.S.”
We have Chinese in our armed forces spying for China, the CCP have police stations in our country to monitor their people and now Trump wants to allow 600,000 “students” all approved by the CCP into our country. Contact Trump and tell him NO.
China has no problem executing foreigners for crimes so why don’t we make treason and destroying America by a foreigner a crime that will result in execution.
That and not allowing them in our country to destroy it are a good start to stopping this crap.
Also, give them the same treatment as diplomats - children born of diplomats on American soil are NOT citizens.
Do the same with students - NO CITIZENSHIP.
And Trump says we should be nice to China.
