President Donald Trump announced the United States is prepared to accept up to 600,000 Chinese students as part of a trade deal his administration is trying to strike with China.
“We’re going to allow, it’s very important, 600,000 students,” Trump told reporters Monday at the White House. “We’re going to get along with China. But it’s a different relationship that we have now with China.”
Trump made the announcement ahead of a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung after he was asked when he would sit down with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Wrong in so many ways:
1) it deprives 600,000 American citizens of places in universities.
2) it continues to fund universities when good policy demands that they be starved until they reform. It makes universities even more reliant on Chinese money and therefore less inclined to resist China's manipulations. The baleful effects on our culture and our politics is already clear.
3) it inserts 600,000 potential spies into our American culture and, most likely, into our advanced technical enterprises. Every Chinese student who has a relative in China must be considered a spy because that relative is essentially a hostage to the Chinese Communist Party. Our leading edge technology developed in universities is at risk as is our technology being developed in the private sector.
Does this make one more or less likely to believe that Donald Trump will intervene if Taiwan is attacked?
