Crime Gone in a Week? The Politics Behind Trump’s Federal Crackdown.

Just days into his federal takeover of Washington’s police force, President Trump declared the problem solved.

“D.C. was a hellhole and now it’s safe,” he said. On Monday, he said he expected the same results in Chicago, the next city on his list for a federal crackdown on crime.

“We will solve Chicago within one week, maybe less, but within one week, we will have no crime in Chicago,” Trump told reporters on Monday.

Mr. Trump’s bold (and misleading) pronouncements expose a key strategy behind his tough-on-crime swagger. For the president, the idea of sending federal forces into American cities — exclusively in states or jurisdictions led by Democrats — is not so much about the complex and time-consuming work of rooting out crime.

Instead, experts on policing say, it’s about being seen as fighting crime, then reaping the political benefits. Mr. Trump is far from the first politician to use crime as a political issue in an attempt to gain leverage over rivals. But few have done it before in such a way that is so often disconnected from crime statistics on the ground or without a long-term strategy to keep crime down after the show of force goes away.

“He’s not really taking on street crime,” said Jeffrey A. Butts, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. “He’s using the crime issue for political posturing and political gain. He’s not alone doing that — a lot of politicians do that. He’s just doing it in ways that are much more dramatic and potentially harmful than other politicians.”

Mr. Trump is approaching the issue of crime with his typical rapid-fire style: issuing orders, deploying law enforcement officers and National Guard troops, taking on Democratic mayors and governors, all while making false and inaccurate...

President Trump is using crime as a political weapon...

He wouldn't be able to use it as a "political weapon" if Democrats weren't pro-crime/criminals.

Not going to pay for the NYT, but in the blurb, there was no statement regarding whether or not crime actual had dropped in D.C.. Which leads me to believe it probably did.

But D.C. is one thing. Not sure about the Constitutionality of sending federal troops into other cities.

“ Not sure about the Constitutionality of sending federal troops into other cities.”

There’s the Insurrection Act of 1807.

Crime has dropped in Washington DC. Sometimes in a very big way.

But driving crime down is like cutting weight. The easy part is driving down crime or cutting weight. The hard part is keeping crime down or keeping the weight off.

If they're attacking federal employees or federal property, sure. Or if the governor has asked for them.

But ordinary street crime isn't an insurrection against the federal government.

In the past, there has been a lot of talk from all sides about reducing crime and making the cities safer. So far, it's all been "Don't make me turn this car around!" Or. "Wait until your father gets home!"

Guess what. This car is turning around, and Daddy is home, and he is taking away the keys to the car away.

All the democrats have to do to avoid this latest crisis is to make their cities safer and actually reduce crime.

Let me guess. The criminals are secretly Pres. Trump backers, and are just postponing their usual car jackings and murders to make him look good.

leaders of the city should be sued for dereliction of duty which has resulted in putting the citizens of those citizens in danger

What a waste of time reading that leadin. Total liberal fabrication and hogwash. (How DOES one wash a hog? Probably in a bathing suit.)

I thought hogwash was the same as sheep dip, but it’s only pig food, as in “swill”.

There are likely two big possibilities. A noticeable percentage of the criminals are gone because they are in federal lock up awaiting deportation. Those who are citizens will be subject to the adjudication of the DC court system, I worry about the possibilities of jury nullification. I have also seen suggestions that some of the criminals have taken their activities to other jurisdictions (primarily PG county MD).

Democrats have screwed up most crime reporting in most major cities. The numbers are totally suspect. They don’t log crimes, don’t respond to them, and the citizenry gets the idea and doesn’t report them, because it doesn’t do any good.

Fortunately (?), there is an important crime that serves as a surrogate for overall level of crime and policing.

That would be murder.

It’s just hard to cover up, ignore, a body.

Based on this measure, DC improved immediately overnight. They went something like 9 days without a murder. This had not happened for quite some time.

When you put the head cheese of criminal organizations in prison for a long time will change the landscape.

Sure, others will try to take their place and Trump will Whack a Mole.

Now the hard part, the Insane #ComDem POL’s.

They know they are in trouble. But not how much trouble they really are in.

“Not sure about the Constitutionality of sending federal troops into other cities”.

Didn’t concern Lincoln and Eisenhower in the Southern States.

We could reduce crime by two thirds more if we get rid of 90% of the skanky broads playing “judgey” in this country. They are the most mediocre and worthless humanoids drawing a government paycheck in America.

Yep - the Dems use crime as a political tool - and to bolster their resumes...

Funny how the NYT missed Trump’s talk about creating a 3 mile circle of safety and cleanliness over time - he didn’t declare it “done” - but he has made a big dent in just 2 weeks.

“ But ordinary street crime isn’t an insurrection against the federal government.”

Refusing to cooperate with or impeding Federal authorities during the lawful performance of their duties certainly could be considered insurrection.
