James Kpou was clutching his “senior citizen” fare card for this city’s vast network of buses, subways and light rail trains when he heard the announcement this week over the intercom at the 69th Street Transit Center.
“Due to a lack of funding, reduced service on all Metro lines begins Aug. 24,” the announcement said. ---SNIP--- Transit agencies also can no longer rely on the billions of dollars of aid they received during the pandemic from the federal government.
Philadelphia received $1.5 billion in federal funds, which were spent by June 2024. Meanwhile, fare revenue has climbed back to just 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels.

Excellent news!
The money for covid, that was mostly used to line the pockets of city communists, was not intended for supporting transit operations...
If the Democrats could, they would “fix” this problem by making cars and other personal transportation options completely illegal.
Not enough is said about the economic destruction caused by the premeditated Obama/Red ChiCom bio weapon attack on Trump. Obama killed millions to get rid of just one man. Despicable.
Correcting the statement --- "Cities also can no longer rely...." Nor should they. Cities are responsible for city transit, among the many responsibilities set to them.
While the incompetent lunacy in California's HSR hot mess is a matter of "who pays." So is Philadelphia's. And NYC's and so on.
Time and past time to clarify responsibilities, as Democrats have so muddled things that "everyone" is supposed to pay for "everything." And put it all on a credit card for someone else to pay. Sometime.
I can’t stand SEPTA bus drivers. Twice I almost had one of them rearend me at 50+ MPH because they wanted to run a red light at which I had already stopped. If the shoulder hadn’t been clear each time I would have gotten clobbered.
I would have gotten clobbered and maybe rich.
SEPTA is kind of a weird beast. It’s not limited to Philly: SEPTA stands for Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority. It covers all of the suburban counties and even has a terminal just across the state line in Delaware.
Yeah - and the cry from the leftists is for more public transportation when they can’t even maintain the systems they have!! Including Chicago and New York City where such transportation is a necessity!
Like farmers who put a scarecrow in the fields, put Daniel Penny or Bernhard Goetz life size cutouts in the train cars and buses.
Great. Make the counties and "just across the state line in Delaware" the tax bases responsible to fund SEPTA.
Tip O'Neill used to say "all politics is local." Making things local-ish would clarify much.
Much and more.
I see more SEPTA bus routes in the suburbs than ever before, (and the worst service in the fast food restaurants is on those lines.) At the same time, fewer people are going to work in the city, and therefore don’t need public transportation to get them there. There also has been no improvement in the rail lines in ages.
What the Brits do is to bid out bus routes.
The company that requires the least subsidy gets to run the route.
The Tube contracting was a mess when I read about it years ago. It is far more than just running stock.

Like B.A.R.T. or D.A.R.T. Bay Area Rapid Transit (San Francisco) and Dallas Area Rapid Transit
🎶 The wheels on the bus go nowhere now, nowhere now. 🎶
Just raise ALL taxes. Problem solved by Demoncrats.
I worked in public transit for 30 years, and if the other companies were like mine, they are way too top heavy. We had directors, assistant directors, and all other manners of managers and all for a ton of different departments. When I got there, there were exactly 3 people running the railcar maintanence department, but when I left 30 years later it was more like 20.
A lot of the Septa drivers are arrogant. I remember one time the driver stopped at McDonald’s and had lunch. He completely screwed up the schedule, and people waiting at other stops had to wait almost an hour because the guy decided to take a lunch break during work time. Lots of other stories about these guys. But there was one good driver who was hard working, friendly and preached the gospel to his passengers!
If Frisco, Texas had a high-speed public transportation system, it would be called...
