Russia signals slow-walk on Trump deal with Ukraine

Russia is sending signals that it intends to slow-walk a peace deal on Ukraine, showing some daylight between the Kremlin and President Trump’s intentions to end the war.

From a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to suggestions of security agreements for Kyiv, Russian officials have expressed doubt about some early prospects of a peace deal, parts of which are also being backed by a contingent of European Leaders.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov tamped down any progress made at a summit at the White House earlier this week where Trump met with seven foreign leaders as well as Zelensky, calling it a “clumsy attempt” by Europe to try to change Trump’s mind. Trump, in turn, welcomed such a meeting.

Lavrov said any discussions of security guarantees — something Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested during their meeting in Alaska last week — would lead to a “road to nowhere” if Moscow isn’t involved.

The tone from the Russians is cause for concern. Trump, Zelensky and the Europeans lamented at the White House that they were finally seeing the first opportunity since the war began to bring an end to the bloodshed, but Moscow is undercutting some key points of such progress.

“There’s more daylight between the United States and Russia than Ukraine might realize,” Michael Rubin, senior fellow with the conservative Washington think tank the American Enterprise Institute, told The Hill.

“Here’s the dynamic that works in Kyiv’s favor: Both Trump and Putin like shifting the goalposts when they make agreements. Trump, however, believes shifting goalposts is his exclusive right. When he sees others doing it, he turns on them. The fact that Putin won’t abide by agreements and won’t silence his guns for Trump’s desired Nobel Prize risks causing one of Trump’s infamous U-turns.”

It should be the Europeans negotiating the surrender anyway. It’s their war, not ours.

Is it time for the US to apply more economic pressure to Russia to end this war?

The war in Ukraine has replaced oil as Russia’s major industry. Putin knows that if the war ends, and there is no more war industry, the economy will be in deep trouble. Yes, they could try to resume oil exports, but the wells are pretty run-down after five years of no spare parts. He did recently issue a decree inviting Exxon-Mobil to return to Russia. Darren Woods has not responded.

Slap those sanctions on the table.

Let the CCCP sweatshirt wearing Lavrov explain to Vald why the economy has stopped.

Issue long range weapons to Ukraine. Let a few fall on Red Square or the Hermitage and see how the folks who aren’t sending their kids to war feel about things.

Russia’s 2024 oil output is on record, as it is 2023 and 2022 and all years before. They joined OPEC to create OPEC+ and so far they have chosen to adhere to the OPEC+ quota.

Those 5 years of no spare parts produced 10.752 million barrels every single day in 2024. Their current quota under OPEC+ is below that, about 9.8 million bpd with all additions.

A bit of apples and oranges because OPEC+ quotas are C&C rather than all liquids, but that is quibbling. The overarching reality is the imagined failure of oil fields is at odds with the numbers.

As for Exxon, they sold their interest in the Kara Sea for $1 when they were forced to leave Russia. Rosneft paid the $1 and continued work. My recall is Sinopec, not PetroChina, stepped in to replace with money and share the bounty.

The Kara Sea is likely to be rather a lot more productive than Guyana. So of course Exxon is begging to be involved.

Duh. The UAF just attempted an amphibious sea-drone attack on Crimea. Russian missiles wrecked military facilities in Odessa. On we go.

The 19th sanctions package is scheduled for September. It should be a game changer, like the first 18 sanctions packages.

Might as well as go ahead with secondary sanctions on India until Russia is ready to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump is more optimistic about dealing with Putin than anyone else I’ve read about. A deal with Putin seems to hinge on giving Putin everything that he wants.

Typical Russian negotiations. It will take several weeks to decide on the size and shape of the table they will sit at.
