Why Donetsk matters so much for Ukraine's defences

A key takeaway from the summit in Alaska is that Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly wants to freeze the war in Ukraine along its current front line in return for the surrender of the rest of Donetsk region.

Russia holds about 70% of the region (oblast), including the regional capital of the same name, after more than a decade of fighting in which Donetsk and neighbouring Luhansk have been the bleeding heart of the conflict.

For Russia to gain all of Donetsk would cement its internationally unrecognised claim to the oblast as well as avoiding further heavy military losses.

For Ukraine to withdraw from western Donetsk would mean the grievous loss not just of land, with the prospect of a new exodus of refugees, but the fall of a bulwark against any future Russian advance.

Then make it a demilitarized zone. Neither faction can ever use that territory to bivouac troops. No bases, no missiles no airbases; there now everybody can relax.

I view this somewhat more bleakly.
Russians have lost a significant portion of their
young men.
Their future is not so bright.
Ukraine has most all its young
men so it is History.
Most that like war don’t add in the damage
it does to a culture, when all their
kids are dead!
Look at how screwed up Europe is, China,
Japan et al.
Y’all send your best men out and kill
them in wars that are generally senseless.
Your society will pay a price!
Sometimes there is a time for war,
but should only be for self protection,
not to conquer.

Their future is not so bright.

Kind of like the Black Death in Europe in the 14th Century.

But it appears that most of Western Europe will be conquered but Eastern Europe should remain intact.

The people in Donetsk DO NOT want to go back to being part of Ukraine.

What about that don't you understand?

It’s close to being liberated and the Banderists being driven out.
