Summary
WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump pledged on Monday to issue an executive order to end the use of mail-in ballots and voting machines ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a move likely to disproportionately favor his Republican Party and spark legal challenges by some states.
Democratic voters typically use mail-in ballots more than Republicans, who more often vote in person.
Trump's pledge is his latest effort to reshape the midterm election battlefield to his party's advantage. He has also urged Republicans in states including Texas and Indiana to redraw congressional districts to increase the likelihood of a Republican candidate being elected.
The November 3, 2026, elections will be the first nationwide referendum on Trump's domestic and foreign policies since he returned to power in January. Democrats will be seeking to break Republicans' grip on both the House of Representatives and the Senate to block Trump's domestic agenda.
"I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we're at it, Highly 'Inaccurate,' Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES," Trump wrote in a social media post.
Trump, who has promoted the false narrative that he, not Democrat Joe Biden, won the 2020 election, has also long cast doubt on the security of mail-in ballots, although evidence of voter fraud is vanishingly rare.
Johanna Warshaw, a spokesperson for the Democratic Governors Association, called Trump's threats a blatant attempt to silence voters.
"Democratic governors are the last line of defense against Trump's attacks on our fundamental freedoms, and they will stand up for the rule of law and the right to vote at every turn," Warshaw said.

If voting for your representative is important to you, get out of bed and off your ars and get to the voting booth on election day.
Hey Reuters, prove that what you’re saying here is true or you should be sued into oblivion for perpetrating a fraud on the American people by calling yourself a news outlet when you’re really just a Democrat Party propaganda vehicle.
No room for Indiana to gain
Already 7-2, with Indy and Gary being a lock
when you’re really just a Democrat Party coup co-conspirator.
The media, not you .
So our military stationed overseas will not have the right to vote?
If Trump follows through, I bet the vote totals from most big Dem cities will be cut in half, maybe by two-thirds.
It is like an automatic reflex lie. 2000 Mules made a very good case that the 2020 election was stolen. Here in Arizona they stole the Governor, Attorney General and Secretary of State race in 2022.
Do people not change felonious voter fraud behavior unless they are credibly frightened of physical harm for doing it? Sad to think people have become so brazen after years and even decades of voter fraud but maybe getting away with it encourages this bad behavior? Then I see the videos posted of entitled shoplifters and I realize we are in a bad place with this.
I wonder if he wants to do away with the absentee ballots quite often used by seniors long before Covid? It was accepted as many seniors have mobility issues, but like everything they get their slimy hands on was becoming corrupted by the left. But how to do it and not piss off a large voting block is a tightrope.
Try banning federal fund for the post office to collect them. Watch the Rat judges go nuts.
Better start now he is going to have a lot of court interference to contend with.
If Trump is successful, the Democrat Party as we know it would cease to exist. Much of their power has been derived through vote fraud, of which mail in balloting is a major contributor.
That's amazing!
Why do you suppose that is?
Let me think. . .
Within my lifetime, they were the only group that was allowed to vote absentee. I'm okay with that system just fine.
Trump has no authority to tell states how to run elections. Period.
They will ALL tell him to pound sand and the SCOTUS will side with them.
This is a fight he is not going to win. But have fun fighting it.
