Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit Mexico next month as the countries try to navigate trade relations with the United States.
Both Mexico and Canada have been subject to tariffs and tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump since he was re-elected last fall.
Trump upped tariffs on Canadian non-CUSMA-compliant goods to 35 per cent earlier this month, but exempted Mexico for now — prompting questions about the different approach to the two countries.
Canada attempted to reach some sort of agreement on tariffs by Aug. 1. But Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, said a viable deal wasn't on table by that deadline.
Trump gave Mexico a 90-day extension of its current tariff regime with the goal of signing a new deal during that period.
Carney's visit to Mexico is scheduled to take place on Sept. 18. The trip was first reported by Bloomberg News.
Since his election, Carney has said he wants to expand relations with other countries to avoid being reliant on the U.S.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said they were "kickstarting" a bilateral economic relationship with Mexico during a visit to the country's capital last week.

Carney doesn’t have time to expand markets and relations with other countries before his economy craters.
Does he want to hook up with the cartels?
There have been numerous carneys in Mexico over the last century plus; this one just happens to run Canada.
Canada’s mixed blessing is their only geographically contiguous neighbor is the largest consumer nation in the world. Since transport costs of goods they export factor in to give them a competitive advantage in pricing their goods to the US vs other overseas nations with higher transport costs, they have been able to sustain their economy by exports to the US. The downside is that if they piss off their major export customer as they are now they lose that competitive advantage when we levy tariffs to obliterate the transport advantage and further price their goods out of our market.Their transport costs to overseas nations are much higher and thus they cannot replace the business they lose here. They may hate us but hey, the customer is always right even if you hate his ass. So it is pucker up time for Canada.
I’m seriously thinking about skipping our yearly winter break to Mexico.
I’m disgusted with their government lately and especially when the Mexican ANTIFA type rioted in Mexico City a few months ago.
They wanted all Americans deported…LEGAL Americans.
Tense relations? Why? Mexico lies, cheats, steals, defrauds and murders us yet we treat them with kid gloves.
Pretty much all HBM (Has Been Media) stories have the same premise these days: "Let's Hate Trump". Tagline is still accurate.
Carney is doing something right, to benefit the U.S.:
“Thousands of Haitians have fled from the United States to Canada under the threat of deportation under Donald Trump, some because of WhatsApp messages falsely saying the country would welcome them.”
Anyone else put in mind of the Zimmerman telegram...
Accurate tagline.
