DONETSK REGION, Ukraine — Ukrainian troops are racing to claw back a key stretch of land on the eastern front after a surprise Russian advance bolstered Moscow’s position as President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska.
Ukraine rushed elite troops to try to seal the disastrous breach after small groups of Russian foot soldiers exploited weak points on Ukraine’s flanks and pushed more than nine miles toward the eastern city of Dobropillya in rapid gains that threaten the security of the entire contested region.
If Russia cements its hold on the territory, it will damage Ukrainian supply lines and bring Moscow closer to its goal of seizing the eastern city of Kramatorsk. Putin has already claimed the whole Donetsk region as his own and is pushing Ukraine to cede all of Donbas, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as part of any deal to end the war. Many Ukrainian civilians, sensing impending crisis, are rushing to evacuate the area.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was shut out of the Alaska summit, said this week he will never agree to give up more territory because it would only serve as a springboard for future Russian attacks against Ukraine.
Despite Ukraine’s insistence that it will not retreat, the timing of Russia’s advance is undeniably a calamity for Kyiv, which already fears its most important ally will abandon it as Trump floats exchanging territories to end the war. Every inch of the Donetsk region that Kyiv loses brings Russia closer to its goal of fully claiming the territory, either on the battlefield or through negotiations.

Such a narrow salient is rarely a good idea. At this point the Russian troops in the northern half of the strip are probably encircled and soon to end up dead or as POWs.
Contrary to first reports, it was not a breakthrough. It was a raid by small number of troops racing forward on motorcycles. There was no follow up by reinforcements. More of a PR stunt than a serious advance.

In 3 1/2 years, no major cities taken. In fact, Russia has conceded that taking cities is too difficult.

They actually lost less than a quater million while killing 1.9m Ukrainian soldiers. Russia never focused on the land, they focused on killing the AFU and as a result broke NATO in the process. All of Europe and the United States are facing severe recessions this fall and winter. Russia has a stable economy, and their economy is not oil based as you’ve been told. Your views on Russia are direct result of the Obama/Clinton Russian Hoax designed to ensure Ukraine entered a war without Trump getting in the way. Because of the Russian Hoax, Trump will eventually correct and educate those like Zeepers who conflate Ukraine with America.
Now that Russia has broken the AFU, you will get the land losses you depend on for a declaration of Russian victory.
Do you actually have any clue what Russia announced on 14 June 2024, which was essentially the Istanbul 1.0 terms, with the addition of only ground based acquisitons. That Trump has yet to actually address Russian negotiating points simply means that to do so would destroy the NATO propoganda that Russia started this conflict. NATO has advanced for over 30 years to attacking Russia directly. Eventually Russia will return fire on the EU and possibly the US. When the day comes that Russia attacks the west directly, the ashes could be traced to Biden’s 2024 October decision to fire missiles at Moscow.
I don't believe much of the reporting on this stupid war.
