The Last Refugees Let Into the U.S. Wonder if Their New Country Wants Them
The New York Times ^ | 15 August 2025 | Shift News Excerpt

Luismar Liendo and Edwin Perez arrived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in January. They are political dissidents from Venezuela. They were granted refugee status by the U.S. President Donald Trump suspended the Refugee Admissions Program and cut off federal funds for nonprofit groups helping refugees. World Relief had expected each refugee to receive $1,325 for the first 90 days.

Dive Deeper:

Luismar Liendo and Edwin Perez, a married couple from Venezuela, experienced a shocking change in climate when they arrived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, facing temperatures much colder than they were used to.

Having been granted refugee status in the U.S., they envisioned a warm welcome and a safe haven, but their hopes were quickly dashed upon arrival.

Shortly after their arrival, President Donald Trump suspended the Refugee Admissions Program, which had been crucial for those fleeing persecution, effectively closing the door on many like them.

Mr. Trump also cut federal funding for nonprofit organizations that assist refugees, which meant that essential support for housing, food, and other necessities was no longer available.

World Relief, the Christian organization helping the couple, had anticipated providing $1,325 in federal support to each refugee for their first three months, but this funding was abruptly removed.

Despite having legal status after thorough vetting, Mr. Perez and Ms. Liendo found themselves in a precarious situation, reflecting the broader challenges faced by immigrants in America during this period.

Their story highlights the difficulties encountered by refugees in the U.S., especially in an environment where the support systems for newcomers are rapidly diminishing.

Aside from the fact that this story is being carried by the ultraleft New York Times, I am inclined to be sympathetic to Ms. Liendo and Mr. Perez who, for some reason, don't share the same surname even though they are supposed to be married.

My sympathy is based on the fact that they are identified as political dissidents from Venezuela. A mere generation ago, Venezuela was the wealthiest nation in Latin America before the Marxists took over and turned it into a $#*+hole.

That being said, I must wonder why a young childless couple can't make it in one of the cheapest places to live in America without government handouts. Rent is cheap and jobs are available.

“The Last Refugees Let Into the U.S.”

Something tells me that they won’t be the ‘last’ refugees.

Not if they're here illegally!!!

If they come in legally, then welcome.

Yeah, that mean old orange man subsequently admitted those horrible WHITE families in from South Africa. How many of them are depending on government handouts versus being gainfully employed?

I'll bet damn near zero.

The left foists the blame on Trump when it should be on the criminals that came here illegally and the politicians that not only allowed it, but abetted.

The problem is all on the Left.

I have always felt that we SHOULD have a mechanism to grant Asylum. I like to think that we, as the best country in the world with the most freedom (ostensibly) would be a safe haven for people undergoing political persecution.

That said, the Left (and this is ALL on them) have totally bastardized and invalidated the concept of “asylum”. They turned any remnant of the standard concept of asylum on its head by granting “asylum” to an enormous swath of people who were in no way being persecuted politically beyond their poverty.

And this was done with NO individual analysis of specific cases, which is a travesty and injustice. There are people out there who are fully deserving of “amnesty”, who will have difficulty getting it because the “amnesty” system is fully inundated with people who DO NOT deserve it.

The New York Times and their reportage and support of the Left is absolutely just as responsible.

How do refugees on the other side of the world end up moving to America and the gold ring, in a country that doesn’t resemble them in any way, instead of going to refugee camps in the neighboring countries of what they are fleeing?

No, the last refugees that President Trump approved were South Africans who are the victims of racism in their home country. They are very welcome here.

This is just more Fake News.

No sympathy. Immigrants are supposed to NOT be a burden on society.

They used to have to list a sponsor on the immagration forms.

ie:You dont step out of an airplane unless up have a chute or a death wish. Same with showing up in a foreign country. Keep your hands in your own pockets, not orhers.

Traditionally, it hasn’t been the custom for Hispanic women to legally take the husband’s name.

I'd be shocked, too. And I live in North Carolina.

If a dictatorship can count on dissidents leaving the country and not making waves, that dictatorship can count on a long-lived dictatorship.

If only those dependent on the dictatorship remain, that country is gone forever, or until the people decide they’ve had enough and revolt. Revolution is not easy and it’s deadly, but, running away is cowardly and leaves your nation in desperate times.

Agreed. For hundreds of years immigrants came to America and did not expect or receive anything from the government except freedom.

We should stop all welfare to immigrants. We should support them coming here to do honest work and to support themselves.

We should not even hint at government welfare to them and create a new dependent class.

Refugee - we have a new term!!! Let’s see if that generates some sympathy. Keep in mind that some of those refugees are smuggling drugs into the country, pimping underage girls and committing other crimes. I don’t think they care if their “new country wants them.”

I like them but they might be lying to get in here. I sure would.

RULE #1 -— Refugees and asylum seeker lie their asses off to get in and stay here. Ilan Omar did!

Asylum seekers are 99% frauds here and in UK. Once they get legal status they start taking vacations in their wretched homelands.
All those Somalian refugees in Minnesota are always visiting Somalia

They used to have to list a sponsor on the immagration forms.

But the big secret is...the welfare departments didn’t pay any attention to those forms and signed them up anyway. I know because I was an eligibility worker for MediCal and Food Stamps and was told...don’t ask, just sign them up.
