California moving forward with partisan redistricting effort to counter Texas’ move

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom stood with other prominent Democratic leaders Thursday to announce that the state will move forward with a partisan plan to redraw congressional maps in an effort to help his party win five more U.S. House seats in 2026.

The move is a direct response to a Republican-led effort in Texas, pushed by President Donald Trump as his party seeks to maintain its slim House majority after the midterm elections. Texas lawmakers are considering a new map that would help them send five more Republicans to Washington, but Democrats have so far halted a vote by leaving the state to prevent their GOP colleagues from meeting Trump’s demands.

Newsom called for a Nov. 4 special election to put the new maps before voters, who must give their approval for them to be in place for the next election. He released a campaign ad on social media as Democrats kicked off a news conference where Newsom stood with a coalition of union leaders and U.S. Sens. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla. State lawmakers must officially declare the special election, which they plan to do next week.

The Democrats’ proposed maps still haven’t been released. That’s expected on Friday. Then, lawmakers plan to quickly approve them next week. Democrats hold supermajorities in both chambers.

Newsom, who is seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, urged Trump in a letter earlier this week to abandon his scheme, telling the president he is “playing with fire” and “risking the destabilization of our democracy.”

The California map would only take effect if Texas and other states move forward with their own redistricting efforts, and they would remain through the 2030 elections. After that, Democrats say they would...

As if the Democrats haven't already gerrymandered California up to its eyeballs.

He can’t do it without the voters of this state okaying it and politico already had a poll showing the majority don’t want to do any gerrymandering

The “non-partisan” commissionin the California Constitution gerrymandered California in favor of the Dems, but that Constitution also bans mid decade redrawing the maps. So the Dems have to start by amending the California Constitution…

Not an easy task

It's true that they've done just about everything possible by traditional methods. Hence, I'm betting they roll up as many Republicans as they can with "shotgun districts" by precincts having no physical connections at all.

I can see it now: a rep having constituents in Modoc and San Benito Counties.

DOA. Any redistricting would have to be approved by voters.

LMAO

no one tell Gavin that it would take changing the California constitution to do what he is saying.

LMAO

The retard doesn’t seem to know this and that the independent commision has 60%+ support.

Gavin is just running his mouth, trying to score points with low IQ liberals for his next presidential run.

Gerrymandering is almost as old as the Republic.
What is new is the Democrats being self-righteous about it.

It completely makes nonsense of any claim there was ever democracy.

CA, MA and IL and others are close to the cheating ceiling for the Dems.

Will the long suffering CA conservatives just say “Oh, well. I’ll have to learn to live with it.”?

Soon the Dems will increase their “taking it to the street” phase as part of looking macho and strong against Trump and us. How violent? We’ll see. The Beto, Newsom and other talk is increasingly defiant against the law.

I guess in 2026 and 2028, we will see a Democrat platform declaring that Gerrymandering is all right.

“Democracy is too important to be left to the will of the voters.”

Shouldn’t it be, “Our Democracy™ is too important to be left to the will of the voters”?

We all know the Dems’ message writers make them say “democracy” in every blab.

Infuriating to me.

I hear it and hate that word because it means “violent mob rule Communism.” 👿🤜🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️🔥🔥🔥🔥

Any redistricting would have to be approved by voters.

I'm well aware of Arnold's "California Citizens Redistricting Commission" initiative Proposition 20. I also remember Proposition 8 as a Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage, which was thrown out by the State Supremes and then dropped by Gray Davis.

So, do you really think pulling a get-around on Prop. 20 is beyond Noisome's even more lawless thugs?
