Past proponents of this idea look to the text of the 1845 congressional resolution annexing Texas: βNew States of convenient size not exceeding four in number, in addition to said State of Texas and having sufficient population, may, hereafter by the consent of said State, be formed out of the territory thereof, which shall be entitled to admission under the provisions of the Federal Constitution.β

That assumes the new states formed would not have a liberal populatiion that would elect liberal Senators. Texas definitely has liberal pockets.
The problem is the communists.
The South would have liked to add four slave states, but I imagine Huston, Austin, et al would have nothing to do with the idea.
“Texas can make the U.S. senate an easy lock with eight more senators”
State senators, not US senators.
Every state is a sovereign political entity.
In times like these it’s a good thing to have a big state.
North, south, west and east Texas? I like it.
NewScum and Holchal would have conniption fits.
US senators, not state senators. The proposal is to turn the current Texas into 5 states.
Maybe that'll give Newscum the idea of turning Commiefornia into 3 or 4 States like some of us up here in Northern Commiefornia have been fighting for.
Ever since Katrina the DemenitiaCRats have aimed to get control there, and they'd split it in a heartbeat if they could be sure the 8 new Senators would be under their thumb.
“The proposal is to turn the current Texas into 5 states”
Interesting but it will never happen.
The key problem is the issue of who gets the Alamo. That’s the central locus of Texan identity.
So what a West Texas, a South Texas, who wants to be called North Texas?
But would *all* the little Texases be red?
Now that Hispanics are becoming Republicans it’s gonna be easier. Did you know the group that voted in the highest percentage for Trump was Native American Indian men? ‘
I suspect ‘minorities’ are getting sick of white liberal ‘elite’ democrats hating in their name.
(”who wants to be called North Texas?”)
The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and surrounding areas already identify themself as “North Texas”
The problem as I see it it that there are only 5 major metropolitan areas in Texas. One could expect that those cities would become the capitals of the new states. This is bad because they all lean left as do many large cities.
An effective counter to that leftist lean would be to count electoral votes using the Congressional District Method instead of the winner-take all of the EC votes in each state. The CDM will insure that hopefully conservative rural and sub-urban Congressional Districts would match or even out-vote the leftist cities.
Overall I don’t see how this would improve Texas’ lot.
That part of the Texas constitution was found null and void when the re-entered the Union after the Civil War.
It seems every time this is brought up, that minor point is forgotten.
