That pet was possibly the prime breadwinner in their home. They deserve a large settlement. Not sure how large.
They can carry rabies. It’s a frigging rodent.////
so can you.
“One day they (corrupt NY officials) will retire to Florida or Tennessee to enjoy fat New York State pensions, while the taxpayers have to pay the judgment and their pensions.”
New York taxpayers are the root of the problem. They elect the worst of the worst and support insane public policies. The heavy hand of justice must come down on New York enablers until they start to act like they have some sense.
Sorry, there needs to be stern actions to stomp out stupidity in New York.
The ‘prime breadwinner’ was far more likely their porn site.
As long as you get a permit from fish and game dept, you can have a native wild animal as a pet here, but it has to be confined to your property. Doesn’t NY have a permitting process for wild pets?
This is the whole case, illegal to have squirrels as pets. Trial over. Those of us who love squirrels will have to settle for the fact that this stunt by the thug government of New York probably caused lots of votes for Trump. P’Nut and Fred’s deaths and the anger it spurred within the hearts of so many people across this nation deserve a statue on the Mall. Those two critters helped SAVE our nation.

According to the article, that’s because they could carry rabies. I wonder if there is a provision in the law that exempts a squirrel that received a rabies vaccination from a vet.
If there isn’t one, there should be.
They didn’t even have a permit to keep the animals. I doubt they’d had them vaccinated.
That about sums it up.
Please find for me a definition of homicide that includes non-humans. The animals were killed. Wrongly and the owners are right to seek compensation. But 10 Million dollars? That is just nonsense.
The SWAT team? Surely not!
I am generally pro-police but it is definitely on a case by case basis.
In my opinion, these days, law enforcement officers run on a spectrum.
Honorable public servants who truly want to protect and serve the community.
Meatheads who get off on a power trip from carrying that badge and weapon.
Incompetent DEI hires (both on the street and in administration).
Drones who will blindly follow the orders of whatever Bolshevik is in the mayor’s office or governor’s mansion and have no problem rounding you up, shooting your dog, or confiscating your weapons in order not to jeopardize their pensions.
I recall reading that they had applied for one, but that it hadn’t been approved for months. If that’s even close to true, then these people aren’t to blame, incompetent bureaucrats are - and, either way, power-hungry pols are to blame for wanting to show who’s boss in the most humiliating way possible.
We might want to wait and hear the original complaint that brought police there to start with. In one article, Longo is even quoted as expressing his own suspicion that someone who knew about his pornography business and also knew that he sometimes babysat children at his home, might have reported him:

Well, we don't know how much compensation they will receive; it could be less than nine million.
I know what you will say: “That nine million of New York tax money could be used to put illegal immigrants up in luxury hotels.”
New York has plenty of money. Might as well waste it on awards - and statues - for little P’Nut.
Sorry, taxpayers, but they should pay. Their liability insurance should cover it.
In New York, as in most jurisdictions, about one-third of the voters are net tax payers, and two-thirds net tax eaters. As the top taxpayers flee to Texas and Florida, this will not change, the state’s lavish waste will just become more oppressive, while having less to waste.
New York is not legally allowed to run a deficit, so previous governors sold prisons and other state property for (♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ cue J. G. Wentworth) Cash Now, and rented the property back from the owners. They would sell a prison or hospital for say, $100 million, and rent it back for 20 years for $7 million a year, guaranteed. The state would have another $93 million to waste, with no borrowing!
It’s New York ... Gov Hokum and her merry crew can easily afford it.
This is the whole case, illegal to have squirrels as pets. Trial over.
It may not be as simple as that.
Did the illegal domesticated pets justify the actions taken by law enforcement? Was their action excessive? Did they request, or demand, that the owner cage and surrender the animals?
I doubt the lawsuit will focus on challenging the lawfulness of seizing the animals. It will focus on asserting the actions of law enforcement were excessive and violated the rights of the owners.
Isn’t illegal immigration illegal too?
